Workshop on Proposing a plan and roadmap to strengthen national capacity for Earth observation based on small satellite system

A workshop, “Proposing a plan and roadmap to strengthen national capacity for Earth observation based on small satellite system” took place in Hanoi on the morning of June 30. The workshop aimed at reporting on the results of cooperation between Vietnam Space Center (VNSC) and the Japanese Consulting Group that has been carried out in the past 6 months, and at the same time collecting comments from representatives of ministries, agencies, sectors and businesses for VNSC to complete the content and submit it to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Prime Minister for approval of the pre-feasibility report on the "Project on Strengthening National Capacity for Earth Observation based on small satellites with high and super high resolution by optical sensor technology, radar, combined with unmanned aerial vehicle”.

Overview of the conference

Opening speech at the workshop, VNSC General Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Anh Tuan said, in February 2021, the Vietnamese Government announced "Decision 169/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister promulgating the Strategy for development and application of space science and technology until 2030". In this newly approved Space Strategy, the Government assigns VAST the task of developing and implementing the "Project on Strengthening National Capacity for Earth Observation based on small satellites with high and super high resolution by optical sensor technology, radar, combined with unmanned aerial vehicle”. On February 26, 2021, VAST assigned VNSC to coordinate with the Institute's units and ministries to perform this task. On the basis of the comprehensive cooperation for many years between the Academy and its Japanese partners, along with the support of the Japanese Embassy, over the past 6 months, VNSC has coordinated with the Japanese consulting group to conduct surveys, research and specific proposals for the Project.

At the workshop, the Japanese consulting group presented an overview of the proposed Master Plan and Roadmap for VNSC during the implementation of the Project. Based on the results of the pre-feasibility study jointly conducted between Vietnam and Japan, the Master Plan Proposal including the following main contents: an overview of the country's national policy and space strategy Vietnam; updated information about satellite beams around the world; Current status in the country, in the region and in the world; Vietnam's socio-economic challenges and demand for satellite beams; Satellite systems and beams to solve socio-economic problems; Developing space technology and capacity in Vietnam; Roadmap for small satellite beam; Effective in terms of benefits and related environmental and social considerations.

Delegates exchanged, discussed and contributed many ideas to complete the Project before reporting to the President of VAST and submitting to the Prime Minister for approval.
