Workshop on Big data application and high performance computing in scientific research and technology deployment at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology
This is a scientific conference of practical significance, in order to affirm the VAST's leading role and position in science and technology and the need to build a national center for big data storage and high-performance computing, at the same time propose issues that need to be prioritized to be solved in order to well fulfill the tasks assigned by the Government in Decision 127/QD-TTg dated January 26, 2021, contributing to the realization of the “Strategy for research, development and application of artificial intelligence to 2030”. The workshop clearly identified a number of core issues to serve as a basis for building the Project "Building a National Center for Big Data Storage and High Performance Computing under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology".
Attending the workshop were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, Head of the Steering Committee to develop the Project; Dr. Pham Tuan Huy, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of VAST, Head of the Inspection Committee. On the side of the Government Office, there was Mr. Nguyen Huu Hai, Department of Administrative Procedures Control. Together with leaders, former leaders of units under the Institute, scientists and experts.
Speaking at the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh said: “On January 26, 2021, the Government issued Decision 127/QD-TTg on the National Strategy on Research, Development and Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to 2030, which assigns tasks to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, to build 01 of 03 national-level centers for big data storage and high-performance computing, together with the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Public Security. VAST has established a Steering Committee and Working Group to develop the project "Building a national center for big data storage and high-performance computing under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology” in Decision 1914/QD-VHL and Decision 1915/QD-VHL dated November 15, 2021. The task of developing a project to build a national center is an important task of VAST, requiring the cooperation and contribution of all VAST member units, as well as the support from relevant ministries and agencies. Within VAST alone, the need for big data storage and high-performance computing to solve specialized and interdisciplinary scientific problems is enormous, not only at VAST scale but also at inter-regional and national scales, as well as international science and technology issues. This workshop is the first step for the units of VAST to share scientific problems, specialized problems that need the support of big data and high-performance computing, as well as proposing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary issues that require the cooperation of many research institutes within VAST, nationally as well as internationally. The sharing of research experiences in the workshop, the comments and presentations will make an important contribution to the formation of the National Center for Big Data and High Performance Computing as directed by the Government”.
The workshop consists of two main contents: reports and a discussion part, sharing experiences of experts. The workshop had 5 main reports, with common points and specificities in the need for the support of big data and high-performance computing, as well as the usage needs associated with the development situation of each unit. In addition to the reports, the workshop also included a discussion session coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Hai Khoi, USTH, together with experts such as Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Quang, former Director of the Center for Informatics and Computing, Chairman of the Center's Scientific Council; Prof. Dr. Pham Quoc Long, former Director of the Institute of Natural Compound Chemistry, Chairman of the Academy's Scientific Council; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Duc Thanh, Co-Dean of the Faculty of Space & Applications, USTH; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Truong Thang, Director of the Institute of Information Technology. The workshop revolved around the content of the current situation, difficulties and advantages in storing, exploiting big data and high-performance computing at the units to improve scientific research and application capacity; deploying technology in a new context; the need to store big data and use high-performance computing power to solve complex problems in scientific research, technology application and deployment; exchange experiences of units in building Data Center (DC), High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure; contributions of units in building the National Center for big data storage and high-performance computing of VAST. The workshop proposed a number of major national problems, especially interdisciplinary problems associated with socio-economic development goals, using AI application models on DC and HPC platforms.
At the end of the workshop, the Drafting Team synthesizes comments to complete the Project, which will be submitted by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to the Government in September on the task of building a national center for big data storage and high-performance computing, cloud computing, fog computing with advanced technology, suitable for actual domestic needs, oriented for efficient operation, rapid and sustainable development.
