Workshop on application of technological processes and bio-active preparations for shrimp farming and organic production
The workshop attracted over 200 delegates, scientists, businesses, representatives of Departments of Science and Technology in the Mekong River Delta, farmers and interested students.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Vice President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, appreciated the potential and advantages of Tra Vinh, mentioning the visit by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Tra Vinh province in April, Prof Cong reaffirmed the right policy that the Prime Minister directed for Tra Vinh province, in which he said that agriculture is a key focus for Tra Vinh to rise; therefore, the locality needs to continue to explore new applications and new research, map out the right path and steps for further development in the future. For shrimp production, Tra Vinh needs to develop planning for production and intensive farming to suit the available potential, in order to work with surrounding localities such as Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau to become a specialized shrimp production for export. In addition, he asked the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to strongly promote the application and development of technology through 4 science and technology programs in cooperation with ministries, localities and businesses to improve businesses’ competitiveness and boost local socio-economic development.

During the workshop, Dong Van Lam, Deputy Secretary of the Tra Vinh Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of Provincial People"s Committee, said that the province’s leaders will always accompany scientists by creating every favourable condition for boosting a synchronous, sustainable and modern scientific and technological sector. He expressed his hope that the workshop can listen to professional and qualified scientists’ voices, thus creating driving force for implementing and applying research in reality. With that expectation, he also asked the province’s managers to take a serious attitude to find useful and suitable applications suitable for the local context and potential.

At the workshop, 7 presentations were given to solve hot issues in shrimp farming, organic production at present, including solutions using microorganic products in treating shrimp aquaculture environment; solutions to sustainable shrimp farming; models on raising white-leg shrimp without using antibiotics and chemicals; application of nanotechnology in plantation and aquaculture; group of technologies and bio-preparations for organic production; assessment of ability to use natural enemies and plant extracts to prevent coconut beetles in Tra Vinh province; a report on aquaculture and organic production in Tra Vinh province. Based on the presented issues, the workshop was divided into two sessions. Session 1: Scientific and technological solutions for sustainable shrimp farming. Session 2: Scientific and technological solutions in plantation.
In the first session, after hearing the overview report on aquaculture and organic production in Tra Vinh province, three groups of solutions for sustainable shrimp farming from the Institute of Biotechnology, the Institute of Chemical Technology and Institute of Tropical Biology were introduced to participants. The solutions are different, but they all share the same goal: Sustainable shrimp farming is a development that can meet current needs without affecting future generations, bringing about economic efficiency, social equality and environmental protection.
In the second session, scientists raised the issue of bio-preparations and the application of nanotechnology in organic production and aquaculture. These are new research directions in our country. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Thi Cam Ha, a female scientist experienced in research and reality, shared, “The immediate and long-term benefits of using biotechnology, as well access to biotechnology by businesses and local managing agencies in Mekong River Delta can be implemented for gaining core technologies and associated technology chains and products.” Her report received much attention from local and surrounding managers.
The final report was from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Anh Son on the application of nanotechnology in plantation and aquaculture. According to Mr. Son, in the increasingly complex conditions of climate change, geopolitical conflicts can seriously affect “food security” in each country; therefore, breeding, science and technology and production techniques need to be prepared. Nanotechnology is the key to solve the problem of increasing maize productivity.

Closing the workshop, Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Dinh Cong appreciated the presentations at the workshop, expressing his pleasure with the care and interest of managers in Tra Vinh province and in the Mekong River Delta in increasing the development of science and technology in combination with local progress. He added that the workshop is an opportunity for discussing and working out measures to provide scientific and technological information, establishing a forum for enterprises and State management agencies to share experiences in research and transfer of science and technology.

Sharing with Prof. Cong, Dr. Nguyen Thien Nghia, Deputy Director of the Tra Vinh Provincial Department of Science and Technology, expressed thanks to speakers for their practical and in-depth analysis, which he said not only helps the Provincial Department of Science and Technology gain initial scientific foundations, but also provides diverse solutions for sustainable shrimp aquaculture and organic production. Based on these results, the Tra Vinh Provincial Department of Science and Technology believes that it can work with scientists from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to better orientations in developing and increasing application of technological solutions and effective models into practical production.
On the sidelines of the workshop, there was an exhibition on commercialized products of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in aquaculture and organic production. Participants visited products/technologies and were provided with scientific information and production experience by experts.
