Workshop entitled: “Applying science and technology to the socio-economic development in the North Western mountainous provinces”
The workshop was attended by Prof. Duong Ngoc Hai, Vice President of the VAST, representatives from Department of Application & Development of Technology, the Institute of Environmental Technology, the Institute of Material Science, the Institute of Energy Science, the Institute of Geology, the Institute of Geography, the Institute of Biotechnology, and the Institute of Universe Technology. Moreover, the workshop also had the participation of Mr. Cam Van Chinh, Vice President of the Son La People’s Committee, Ms Cu Thi Thoa, Permanent Member of the Son La People’s Council, and leaders of the Departments of Science and Technology of Son La, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Hoa Binh, Phu Tho, and Yen Bai.

This was the first forum of the VAST organized in North Western provinces in the application of science and technology. At the workshop, scientists, managers and businesses’ representatives had opportunities to exchange ideas in order to enhance the application of results of science and technology to the socio-economic development in Son La and the North Western mountainous provinces such as: managing natural resources, forecasting to prevent and mitigate natural disasters, building infrastructure and putting science and technology – communication into practice, developing energy sources, dealing with environmental pollution, and applying science and technology to agriculture and forestry.
13 reports were selected to be presented at the workshop. Although the reports did not reflect the diversity of the application of science and technology, they met the demand of providing information and boosting the application of science and technology to the socio-economic development of Son La in particular and the North Western provinces in general.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Cam Van Chinh, Vice President of the Son La People’s Committee applauded the VAST’s idea of setting up a forum for managers, scientists and businesses to have opportunities to exchange ideas for the application of science and technology to the socio-economic development of the North Western provinces. He hoped that the workshop would open effective cooperation between the VAST and North Western provinces and pledged that Son La will offer the most favorable conditions for the VAST and its agencies to conduct works in Son La.

After the workshop, representatives visited some typical enterprise models of Son La such as: the Moc Chau Dairy Cow Breeding Company, the Red Flag Tea Joint-Stock Company, and the Moc Suong Tea Business and Production Company.
Right after the workshop entitled: “Applying science and technology to the socio-economic development in the North Western mountainous provinces” closed, some agencies under the VAST, such as the Institute of Environmental Technology and the Center for Supporting Technology Development and Service signed a number of contracts in order to implement science and technology in some localities of North Western provinces.
