VNREDSat-1 System continues operation into its 14th Year

21/05/2026
VNREDSat-1 is Vietnam’s first integrated remote sensing satellite system, serving as an active and autonomous monitoring tool for natural resources and environmental management, scientific research, training, socio-economic development, and national security. The system’s continued operation into its 14th year demonstrates Vietnam’s resilience and proactiveness in the field of remote sensing satellite technology in low Earth orbit.

Successfully launched on May 7, 2013, with an initial expected lifespan of five years, VNREDSat-1 continues to provide Vietnam with an autonomous and reliable source of satellite imagery data.

During its operation, the VNREDSat-1 system encountered several technical issues that interrupted the provision of image data. However, drawing upon accumulated knowledge and experience, engineers of Vietnam National Space Center took proactive measures and coordinated efforts to resolve these issues, contributing to the continued operation of the system into its 14th year.
From 2020 to the present, the VNREDSat-1 system has provided nearly 30,000 satellite image scenes serving natural resources and environmental management and monitoring, scientific research, training, socio-economic development, and national security, thereby contributing to affirming Vietnam’s sovereignty in space.

With an operational model tailored to practical needs, the VNREDSat-1 system has contributed to the development of Vietnam’s space infrastructure, while also serving as an important technical and human resource foundation for upcoming low Earth orbit remote sensing satellite projects of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
