Visit and Working Session of Prof. Romain Murenzi at the International Center for Research and Training in Mathematics

21/08/2025
From July 21 to July 25, 2025, Prof. Romain Murenzi was invited by UNESCO to serve as an expert in evaluating the activities of the International Center for Research and Training in Mathematics (ICRTM), in preparation for the renewal of the cooperation agreement between the Center and UNESCO.

During his working visit to Vietnam, he met with various key agencies and partners, including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the leadership of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), the Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO, the Secretariat of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, the UNESCO Office in Hanoi, the leadership of the Institute of Mathematics, and the Board of Directors of the International Center for Research and Training in Mathematics. In addition, he held separate discussions with the Center’s strategic partners, such as the National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), Hanoi Pedagogical University 2, and the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi.

In his working session and discussions with the Center’s Board of Directors, he highly appreciated the seminars and international cooperation activities organized by the Center. He acknowledged the Center’s efforts in building strategic partnerships with both domestic and international collaborators and encouraged further strengthening of these activities in the future. He valued the professional contributions that the Center has made and noted that, alongside academic development, the Center has also effectively implemented communication activities to more broadly disseminate UNESCO’s messages to the public.

During his meeting with individuals who had previously received research support from the Center—including young talents, doctoral candidates, and early-career scientists—he emphasized that providing research support in the form of scholarships or participation in research projects is a common practice worldwide, particularly for doctoral students. He commended the Center for fulfilling this role effectively.

Notably, he delivered a public lecture on the topic “The Link between Education, Science, and Economic Growth in Poverty Reduction,” which attracted the interest of many delegates from various scientific fields such as Digital Agriculture, Space Technology, and Publishing. In his lecture, he stressed that achieving sustainable development requires balancing and harmonizing three essential pillars: economy, environment, and education. He affirmed that investing in education is investing in the future—a long-term and solid foundation for advancing social progress.

He also indicated that he would propose certain collaborations with the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, as well as with several universities in Africa and the United States.

His insightful discussions and recommendations not only recognized the Center’s achievements but also provided proposals for the Center to further enhance its role in promoting research and disseminating UNESCO’s values to the community—particularly in expanding cooperation with Category 2 Centers and countries in the region as well as in Africa, and with the Third World Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Romain Murenzi, an American physicist of Rwandan origin and former Minister of Science of Rwanda, served as Executive Director of TWAS—the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries—in Trieste, Italy, from April 2011 to May 2016. He then spent 14 months as Director of the Division of Science Policy and Capacity-Building in the Natural Sciences Sector at UNESCO in Paris, France, before returning to the role of Executive Director of TWAS in September 2017. He held this position until November 2023, when he stepped down to take up a teaching position at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
