On the morning of November 7, 2017, Mr. Dongwha Kum, President of the Vietnam – Korea Institute of Science and Technology (VKIST), together with a delegation of experts, paid a working visit to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). Academic and Dr. Chau Van Minh, VAST President, and leaders of the International Cooperation Department, Institute of Materials Science and Institute of Biotechnology, welcomed the delegation.

At the meeting, Mr. Dongwha Kum gave a general introduction about VKIST. The establishment of VKIST in Vietnam is an important milestone in the cooperation in scientific and technological training and research between the governments of Vietnam and Korea, reflecting the sentiment and special relationship between the two people. VKIST is currently constructing facilities at Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park on an area of over 196,000 square metres, and the project is expected to be completed by 2020 with an initial budget of USD70 million financed by the two Governments. VKIST was established with the aim to apply and develop advanced science and technology to serve the sustainable socio-economic development. At first, VKIST will focus on short-term technology products that can be applied immediately to the industry and satisfy market demand.

Dongwha Kum said that VKIST had conducted an industrial survey to have a general look at research in applied science and technology in Vietnam. The two areas that VKIST focuses on are application of information technology and biotechnology. Mr. Dongwha Kum added he hoped that when the two academies cooperate, VKIST can take advantage of VAST"s scientific research results in the two areas.

“As VKIST is currently in the process of establishment and development, it hopes to learn from VAST"s experience in operation and management,” said Mr. Dongwha Kum.

On the VAST side, President Chau Van Minh expressed his impression on research of applied science into the industrial economy both in short and long term by VKIST. He emphasized that VAST would be willing to support and cooperate with VKIST.

According to President Minh, in Vietnam, there are many models of cooperation with foreign countries, for example, the Hanoi University of Science and Technology is a model of cooperation between Vietnam and France. In addition, under the VAST, the Institute of Biotechnology and the Institute of Information Technology are two units with very close research areas that VKIST is interested in, therefore, the two sides can cooperate together.
