Vietnam elected to Legal and Technical Committee - the international authority on the ocean bottom

On September 2, the website of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) announced the decision of the ISA Council officially approving the list of members of the Legal and Technical Commission (LTC) term 2023-2027. Accordingly, Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha, Director of Institute of Oceanography, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Vietnam's candidate, was elected to become a member of LTC for this term.

Assoc. Dr. Dao Viet Ha is one of Vietnam's veteran experts in the field of marine environmental science with more than 30 years of experience in the industry.

Currently, Prof. Dr. Dao Viet Ha is Director of the Institute of Oceanography (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee on Oceanography of Vietnam. She has led many international projects on oceanography, and held the position of Project Manager of international cooperation on marine toxins in the Western Pacific region.

41 members elected LTC for the term 2023-2027 come from the following countries: Togo, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Tanzania, Cameroon and Uganda (representing the Africa region); Saudi Arabia, Philippines, Fiji, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, India, Tonga, China and Vietnam (representing the Asia-Pacific region); Australia, France, Portugal, New Zealand, UK, Norway, Spain, Belgium and Germany (representing Western Europe and other countries); Chile, Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Costa Rica and Jamaica (representing Latin America and the Caribbean); and Russia, Poland, Ukraine and the Czech Republic (representative of Eastern Europe).

LTC is a specialized agency of ISA, established on the basis of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

LTC plays an important role in the operation of ISA, making recommendations for the ISA to perform its function, especially the management of exploration of non-living resources on the seabed and the subsoil of the seabed beyond national jurisdictions.

Assoc. Dr. Dao Viet Ha has published more than 40 articles in international and national scientific journals and is the main author of 01 useful solution granted by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam in 2018.

She was a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo, Japan in 2012, an international lecturer at a number of training courses on marine toxins in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Kuwait, Indonesia and Thailand. She has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students at many domestic and foreign universities.

Assoc. Dr. Dao Viet Ha is also a speaker at many major regional and international conferences.
