Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology works with French National Museum of Natural History

On May 12, 2022, Mr. Dominique Laffly, Scientific and University Attaché, French Embassy in Vietnam, and Mr. Denis Duclos, Director of International Relations, French National Museum of Natural History, paid a working visit to Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Head of International Cooperation Department, and representatives of leaders of the Vietnam Museum of Nature, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Institute of Marine Biochemistry and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, received the delegation.

The overview of the working session

The working session aimed to exchange and discuss cooperation in museum research, especially participation in the project "Sharing and preserving Vietnamese heritage" supported by France in 2022 and 2023. This project provides professional development opportunities for museum workers at research institutions and universities.

At the event, Dr. Le Quynh Lien briefly introduced the research fields and achievements made by VAST over recent years, and emphasized outstanding results in museum work, especially the project "Building a National Specimen Collection of Vietnam's Nature" implemented by VAST in two periods of 2011-2015 and 2015-2025, which has provided thousands of natural specimens for the development of the Vietnam's nature museum system.

Denis Duclos, Director of International Relations, French National Museum of Natural History, introduced the project "Sharing and preserving Vietnamese heritage" to concretize cooperation activities between agencies and organizations of France and Vietnam, promoting and preserving the natural and cultural heritages of Vietnam, focusing on 3 main areas: professional training for staff working in the museum in Vietnam; development of training programs; and supporting the design and development of pilot projects in heritage conservation in three regions of Vietnam. Mr. Denis Duclos said that, with experience in managing a system of more than a thousand museums with a history of hundreds of years from France as well as experience in the process of developing the French National Museum of Natural History into one of the best museums in the world, the French National Museum of Natural History is ready to continue developing the existing cooperation between the two sides; and at the same time, exchange and build new professional opportunities and improve staff capacity. Assoc. Dr. Nguyen Trung Minh, General Director of Vietnam Museum of Nature, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Truong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, and Assoc. Dr. Doan Mai Huong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Marine Biochemistry, exchanged proposals to strengthen cooperation in the work of collection, preservation, display, education and training, postgraduate training, human resource training, etc., especially through the support and connection of the French Embassy in Vietnam.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed on a proposal to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Vietnam Museum of Nature to promote specific cooperation in the near future.
