Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology visits and works at Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov

Within the framework of a business trip to the Russian Federation, on March 24, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), had a meeting with Prof. Yuri Mazei, Vice Rector in charge of International Cooperation of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov (MSU). Also participating in the delegation was Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Phong, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH); Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Director of International Cooperation Department; and Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Head of Vietnam Science and Technology Representative Office in the Russian Federation.

At the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh affirmed the tradition of cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, especially in the past period when many generations of Vietnamese students studied and grew up at MSU; including many who have become leading scientists and leaders of VAST. Currently, VAST is the leading research agency in Vietnam, directly under the Government and with an organizational structure of 3 undergraduate and postgraduate training institutions, and the potential for cooperation with MSU,  the oldest university of the Russian Federation, is enormous.

Prof. Yuri Mazei briefly introduced the history of MSU's development, 5 megascience projects being implemented at MSU, cooperative training and research activities implemented by MSU abroad such as student exchange programs with the European community and, MSU branch in China. In the past period, MSU has cooperated with VAST through joint research projects within the framework of the Russian Basic Research Foundation, so MSU wishes to continue and expand cooperation with VAST. 

The two sides discussed the direction of cooperation and agreed in the coming time to discuss to soon sign a joint cooperation agreement. The two sides also plan to build a working group to promote the joint degree training program, co-guide students, and experiment with developing a joint research group from a small level,... so that the cooperation comes into substance and can be implemented effectively.

During the time working at MSU, the VAST delegation visited and exchanged orientations for cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry – one of the largest faculties and formed from the first day of MSU's establishment and also where many generations of Vietnamese students have studied and been established. Prof. A.A.Goryunkov, Head of the Department of Chemistry with Professor in charge of the Department of Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Electrical Chemistry, introduced to the Academy delegation the main training majors and research directions of the Faculty.

During the time working at MSU, the VAST delegation visited and exchanged orientations for cooperation with the Faculty of Chemistry – one of the largest faculties and formed from the first day of MSU's establishment and also where many generations of Vietnamese students have studied and been established. Prof. A.A.Goryunkov, Head of the Department of Chemistry with Professor in charge of the Department of Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials Chemistry, Electrical Chemistry,... introduced to the Academy delegation the main training majors and research directions of the Faculty.Discussion at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh said Chemistry is one of the key research areas at the Academy, with 4 specialized research institutes and more than 10 related research institutes. Based on discussions with MSU leaders on cooperation in student exchange, co-guidance, and joint research implementation looking forward to developing specific cooperation contents to promote the potentials and strengths of the two sides. The two sides also agreed to soon organize an online working session between departments in the MSU Faculty of Chemistry and affiliated research units of VAST, to exchange research directions and aim to develop cooperation content in the coming time.

Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov was founded in 1755 by decree of the Russian Empress Elizaveta and in 1940 was renamed in honor of the outstanding Russian scientist M.V. Lomonosov who made great contributions to the formation of the University. MSU is the largest and oldest University of the Russian Federation, with the highest academic traditions and standards. So far, the University has had 11 Nobel Prize winners and 5 Fields Medal winners. Currently, MSU has 39 faculties, including more than 4000 lecturers including about 100 academicians of the Russian Academy of Sciences. There are 40,000 students and approximately 10,000 high school students participating in various supplementary courses at MSU. With an important role in academic training in the Russian Federation, in 1992 MSU was recognized by the Russian Federation as an autonomous educational institution (receiving funding from the budget, not through the Ministry of Education). The 2007 Charter of the Russian Federation emphasized the leading role of MSU in the development of training, research and development of Russian culture as part of its national heritage and in 2008 MSU became an agency in the Federal Government, in which the head of the University is the Government Representative.
