Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology visited and worked with science and technology partners in Europe

Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) has cooperated with many scientific academies of European countries, national research units and European national universities. In order to continue to promote this cooperation, a VAST delegation led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, visited and worked with Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) and a number of research units in Germany, Austria and Hungary from July 22-29, 2024.

Partners shared with the delegation about the scientific organization system in Germany, Austria and Hungary; exchanged and updated the functions, tasks, organizational structure and outstanding achievements of the two National Academies of Austria and Hungary; discussed the similarities between European academies and VAST; assessed the implementation of the VAST-ÖAW, VAST-HAS cooperation agreements and the directions for cooperation and coordination to promote the strengths of each party.

During their time in Austria, the delegation worked with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), an international organization established in 1972 with headquarters in Laxenburg, Austria, of which Vietnam has been an official member since 2013, and VAST was assigned by the Government as the national representative at IIASA. The two sides updated a number of new research results in the use of IIASA's GAINS model to analyze and forecast air pollution and the content of cooperation with Vietnam and VAST in researching the application of this model; research on water security, environmental impacts and biodiversity; some results of cooperation with Vietnamese research groups. Cooperation contents to strengthen the participation of VAST in particular and Vietnam in general in IIASA's research programs, NCS and Postdoc programs, cooperation in improving human resources, continuing to focus on promoting projects applying the GAPS model, research related to water security, etc  analyzing the impact of climate change on ecosystems, scientific basis for assessing the effectiveness/impact of water resource change on the socio-economy of Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries were also discussed at the meeting.

In Hungary, the VAST delegation honor the late General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and recorded the funeral book at the Vietnamese Embassy in Hungary. It was also here that the VAST delegation worked with the Research Center for Astronomy and Earth Sciences under the network of Hungarian Science Centers HUN-REN (an organization established on the basis of a number of research units of Hungarian Academy of Sciences and other Hungarian research units) and Hungarian Museum of Natural History (which has many cooperation activities with Vietnam since the 1960s and VAST since the 1980s); discussed the promotion of scientific research and training cooperation; exchanging specimens and implementing research and conservation activities of natural resources in combination with exhibition and museum activities in the coming time.

VAST delegation working at Cologne Zoo, Germany

Continuing the cooperation on ecological and biodiversity conservation in Vietnam, during the working time at the Cologne Zoo, Germany, the VAST delegation discussed the recent cooperation between the two sides in the implementation of breeding and conservation of wildlife endangered, precious, rare and prioritized protection of Vietnam; technical advice on building barns in accordance with the biological and ecological characteristics of species; evaluate the effectiveness of the species breeding program at Me Linh Biodiversity Station and Vietnam Museum of Nature in Hue. Cologne Zoo also introduced to the delegation the Program for the Conservation of Rare Wild Fauna of Vietnam (VIETNAMAZING) implemented by the German Zoo system and the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA); especially introducing the exhibition area of the VIETNAMAZING Program, the practical process of conservation of reptiles in Vietnam at the Zoo has attracted a large number of visitors and learners from Cologne and many other cities in Germany. In the coming time, the Vietnamazing project will continue to cooperate with VAST and Vietnam to carry out research and conservation activities in Vietnam as well as guide and support propaganda activities on the protection of biodiversity resources to the community.

 

In addition to exchange and cooperation activities, the VAST delegation had working sessions with Vietnamese Ambassadors to Austria, Hungary and Germany; updating the results of the delegation's work as well as cooperation activities between VAST and academies and research organizations in the three countries; at the same time, it is proposed that Vietnamese Embassies in host countries continue to support cooperation activities between VAST and partners in the above three countries as well as other European partners; making a practical contribution to strengthening Vietnam's diplomatic relations with the European community in general and the three countries of Germany, Austria and Hungary in particular.
