Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology signed Agreement to establish "Vietnam - France International Research Laboratory on Mathematics and Applications"
The event drew the participation of Prof. Dr. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST; Prof. Ngo Bao Chau, Director of VIASM; Prof. Jean-Stephane Dhersin, Associate Scientific Director of CNRS; Prof. Dominique Laffly, Counselor for Science and Cooperation - French Embassy in Vietnam; Prof. Jean-Mac Larvest, Rector of Vietnam-France University; together with leaders of several VAST-affiliated units, mathematicians from the Institute of Mathematics under VAST, University of Natural Sciences and Hanoi National University of Education.

The agreement to establish IRL FVMA is a continuation of the ForMath Vietnam International Laboratory (Laboratoire International Associé Formath Vietnam-LIA FV) project implemented since 2011 between VAST and CNRS on the basis of results from joint research groups since 1990s. With the aim of supporting the cooperation in mathematics research and training between France and Vietnam, in 10 years of implementing LIA FV, hundreds of graduate students, PhD students, and young scientists were supported and introduced to France for study and research; hundreds of French lecturers and researchers have come to Vietnam to teach, collaborate in research, and jointly organize and participate in conferences and seminars. In addition to high-quality joint publications, the outstanding achievement of the project is the training of a generation of young mathematicians who have been actively contributing to the research and development of Mathematics in Vietnam in general and VAST in particular. IRL FVMA will continue to support research exchange between Vietnam and France, Master and PhD programs; conferences, seminars and summer schools and schools of the International Center for Basic and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA).

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Le Truong Giang highly appreciates the cooperation and support of French research units in general and CNRS in particular in developing scientific and technological research directions as well as improving research capacity at VAST. In particular, the close and long-term cooperation with the Institutes of Mathematics and French mathematicians has contributed to the development of Mathematical research at VAST to the regional level and approach to the world today. Prof. Jean-Stephane Dhersin and Prof. Ngo Bao Chau shared about the process of collaborating with VAST scientists to carry out basic research on Mathematics in LIA FV over the past time, and hoped to develop a level of cooperation from LIA group to become an IRL research unit, IRL FVMA that will bring more quality research and training in the coming time. Prof. Dominique Laffly has identified Mathematics as a fundamental science and Mathematics is also one of the first fields of scientific cooperation between research institutions, French universities and Vietnam. The French Embassy always supports and promotes scientific and technological cooperation between France and Vietnam, especially through joint research activities and training coordination between the two sides.

On the basis of the friendship between Vietnam and France along with the long-term and traditional scientific cooperation between VAST and CNRS, "Vietnam - France International Research Laboratory on Mathematics and Applications" promises to continue to achieve many successes in promoting cooperation in Mathematics research and training in Vietnam.
