Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology receives Australian marine scientists delegation

On May 11, 2022 in Hanoi, a delegation of Australian marine scientists, including leaders and officials from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; the Australian Geosciences Agency, the Australian Institute of Marine Science, the University of Sydney and the Australian Embassy in Hanoi, paid a working visit to the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Head of International Cooperation Department; Dr. Nguyen Le Minh, Deputy Head of International Cooperation Department; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Quan, Director of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment received the delegation.

The working session aims to exchange and discuss cooperation opportunities in the field of marine science and technology, especially cooperation opportunities for the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment within the framework of the Marine Natural Resources Initiative of Australia.

The overview of the working session

At the meeting, Dr. Le Quynh Lien briefly introduced the research fields and achievements of VAST over the recent years. Regarding research results on marine science and technology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Quan said that the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources over the years has made many achievements in the conservation, management and sustainable development of resources and environment of sea and islands. In particular, the Institute has successfully applied advanced technologies, such as automatic diving technology by robots, techniques for monitoring coastal ecosystems by unmanned civil aircraft, techniques of high-yielding environmentally friendly aquaculture products such as Biofloc and RAS.

On behalf of the Australian delegation, Dr. David Souter, Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMs), introduced the latest research results of AIMs, highlighting the open large database (Reef Cloud) for Australia and countries in the Indo-Pacific region. AIMs are ready to transfer technologies for monitoring and mapping the coral reef bottom as well as some techniques of artificial reproduction in order to actively source coral seed for artificial coral reef restoration programs in degraded coral reef areas of Vietnam.

At the end of the working session, the two sides expressed their wish to continue to have more in-depth discussions and discussions on cooperation opportunities in the field of marine science and technology, and hopes to cooperate in research and development soon, transferring advanced scientific and technological achievements, contributing to the management of marine natural resources as well as ensuring sovereignty and security in the East Sea, which both countries have the same interest.
