Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology contributes 2 out of 10 outstanding science and technology events in 2021
The announcement ceremony of the 10 science and technology events took place online at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology
VAST is honored to contribute 02 out of 10 outstanding science and technology events in 2021: Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, was honored to receive the Order of the Legion of Honor from the French Republic and the Medal of National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for his achievements in scientific research and continuous contributions for scientific and technological cooperation; The project "Development and application of biosensor system to quickly determine BOD and toxicity in water" by the research team of Dr. Pham Thi Thuy Phuong (Institute of Chemical Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), won the Best Innovation Award of the Asia Innovation Award 2021.
Event 1: The field of honoring scientists - Professor, Academician Chau Van Minh was honored by France and Belarus
On behalf of VAST, Vice President Chu Hoang Ha received the certificate of voting from the Science and Technology Journalists Club
Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh was the first Vietnamese person working in the field of natural science and technology to be awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor from the French Republic. As President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, he has supported and promoted cooperation, training and technology transfer between French national research units and units under VAST through nearly 200 cooperation projects with hundreds of trained doctors and masters, many of which are now professors, associate professors, leading scientists, leaders of units in Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. In particular, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh actively negotiated and built a roadmap for the effective implementation of two scientific and technological cooperation projects symbolizing Vietnam-France friendship, which are Vietnam's first Earth observation satellite project VNRED-Sat1 and the project to build and develop Hanoi University of Science and Technology (or Vietnam - France University), and write new pages in the cooperation relationship between VAST and French partners in particular and between Vietnam and the French Republic in general.
Awarding the France’s Order of the Legion of Honor
Also in 2021, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus awarded the Medal to Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, recognizing the research achievements as well as the active and consistent support of Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh in expanding humanistic cooperation between the two countries, at the same time, actively promoting the development of science and technology cooperation relations between Vietnam and the Republic of Belarus in general, between VAST and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in particular.
The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus awarded the Medal to Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh
This is the 18th Medal that the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has awarded so far to individuals and groups with outstanding scientific achievements in Belarus and internationally.

Event 2: The field of natural sciences - Vietnamese scientific works won the Best Innovation Award of the Asia Innovation Award 2021
Hitachi Global Foundation announced the project "Development and application of a biosensor system for rapid determination of BOD and toxicity in water" by the research team of Dr. Pham Thi Thuy Phuong (Institute of Chemical Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology), won the Best Innovation Award of the Asia Innovation Award 2021. The prize is worth 3 million yen, equivalent to 600 million VND.
This award honors the research of Dr. Pham Thi Thuy Phuong and colleagues for creating a biosensor research system that allows the determination of BOD value (Biochemical Oxygen Demand, which represents the amount of organic waste in water that can be decomposed by microorganisms) and water toxicity accurately with low coefficient of variation, fast analysis time, easy to use for quick determination of wastewater quality.
Biosensor research system to measure BOD and toxicity
In just a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the complexity of the water source, the biosensor research system to measure BOD and toxicity by Dr. Pham Thi Thuy Phuong and colleagues from Institute of Chemical Technology (VAST) was able to detect the risk of polluting water when discharged into the receiving source.
With low investment and operating cost, the biosensor system is expected to be applied in an automatic and continuous environmental monitoring system. Thereby, assessing water quality directly at the source aims at early warning to minimize environmental incidents, contributing to the protection of aquatic and terrestrial life.

Other outstanding science and technology events in 2021 The field of mechanisms and policies 1 – The 13th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam identified “science-technology, innovation” as one of the strategic breakthroughs. This is the first time, the Document of the Party Congress identifies “science-technology, innovation” as one of the strategic breakthroughs for national construction and development. Thereby affirming that “science-technology, innovation” are not only a driving force but also a foundation for Vietnam’s socio-economic development. The field of social sciences The field of applied research: 4 works 4 – Embankment work to prevent coastal erosion in Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. The embankment work to prevent coastal erosion at the tourist area of Lang Fish, Phuoc Thuan commune, Xuyen Moc district, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, has just been accepted, handed over and put into use in phase 3 with a total length of about 1.3km. The current situation of the coast of Xuyen Moc district has long been assessed by experts in irrigation, scientific councils inside and outside Ba Ria - Vung Tau province and Xuyen Moc district as having very serious local erosion. Along the 40km coastline in Xuyen Moc, temporary emergency measures are being used to minimize waves penetrating inland. 5 – Clothes to cool down for medical staff to prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2021, a cooling shirt for medical staff was researched and put into trial production by a group of engineers from Institute of Technology Applications (Ministry of Science and Technology). The leader of the research team is Assoc. Prof. Mai Anh Tuan, currently working at the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications - University of Technology - Vietnam National University, Hanoi. It is designed in the form of a vest, worn over medical uniforms or inside medical protective clothing (PPE) to support cooling for medical staff while working. 6 – Vietnam “Portable isolation helmet” was honored by WIPO. On November 29, 2021, at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland, a group of three Vietnamese (Do Trong Minh Duc, Tran Nguyen Khanh An and Nguyen Hoang Phuc) were awarded the title of Youth Ambassador for Intellectual Property of WIPO. The event took place under the witness of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, within the framework of his official visit to Switzerland and a visit to work with WIPO. This is the first time WIPO has awarded this title in the Asia-Pacific region, and the second time this title has been awarded during WIPO's 50-year history (founded in 1967). International cooperation 8 - Impressive TECHFEST 2021. 3 months after launching, the program "National Innovation Startup Day - TECHFEST Vietnam 2021" ended on December 15 with impressive numbers. In the context of the complicated COVID-19 pandemic, Techfest 247 online exhibition has been enthusiastically supported by the community, attracting more than 2.5 million attendees in person and online; more than 120 events were held. |
