Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology Attends the Memorial and Burial Ceremonies for Remains of Martyrs in Tay Ninh, An Giang, and Dong Thap Provinces
The solemn ceremonies were organized by the Provincial Party Committees, People's Councils, People's Committees, and Fatherland Front Committees of the respective provinces, in coordination with the National Steering Committee for the Search, Gathering, and Identification of Remains of Martyrs (National Steering Committee 515), to pay tribute to Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Cambodia during wartime periods, as well as heroes who laid down their lives domestically.
In Tay Ninh Province (morning of July 6, 2026): The ceremony was held at the Vinh Hung – Tan Hung Martyrs' Cemetery (Vinh Hung Commune). The province organized the reception, memorial, and burial for 173 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Cambodia. This was the result of gathering efforts during the 2025–2026 dry season carried out by Search Teams K70, K71, and K73 under the Military Headquarters of Tay Ninh Province. VAST dispatched a delegation to attend the memorial and burial ceremony, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phi Quyet Tien, Director of the Institute of Biotechnology, and Dr. Tran Trung Thanh, Director of the DNA Identification Center, Institute of Biotechnology.
In An Giang Province (morning of July 9, 2026): The memorial, tribute, and burial service was held at 7:30 AM at the Doc Ba Dac Martyrs' Cemetery (Thoi Son Ward). On this occasion, the province buried 235 martyrs' remains, including 193 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia and 42 remains of martyrs who died domestically, gathered during the 2025–2026 dry season. Comrade Vo Thi Anh Xuan, Member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee and Vice President of Vietnam, attended and directed the ceremony. As a member agency of National Steering Committee 515, VAST sent a working delegation headed by Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha, Vice President of VAST and Member of National Steering Committee 515.
In Dong Thap Province (morning of July 9, 2026): The memorial, tribute, and burial service took place at 8:00 AM at the Tam Nong Martyrs' Cemetery (Phu Tho Ward). In this phase, the province buried 65 martyrs' remains, including 44 remains of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who died in Cambodia and 21 remains of martyrs who died domestically, gathered by Team K91 during the 2025–2026 dry season. Comrade Nguyen Thi Hong, Member of the Party Central Committee and Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly, attended and directed the ceremony. VAST dispatched a delegation led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trung Nam, Deputy Director of the Institute of Biotechnology.
These results were achieved through search and gathering operations during the 2025–2026 dry season conducted by Search and Gathering Teams K90/CCT, K92, and K93 under the Military Headquarters of An Giang Province, and Team K91 under the Military Headquarters of Dong Thap Province.
At the memorial services in Tay Ninh, An Giang, and Dong Thap, the VAST delegation, alongside delegates, offered flowers and incense, observing a moment of silence to express deep respect and gratitude toward the heroic martyrs who courageously sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of the Fatherland and for fulfilling their noble international duties in Cambodia.
As a member agency of National Steering Committee 515, VAST has been assigned to lead the research, application, and transfer of advanced DNA identification technologies; participate in establishing and refining procedures, technical standards, and databases to serve the identification of martyrs' remains. At the same time, VAST directs its affiliated units to receive and conduct DNA testing on unidentified martyrs' remains across 8 of the 34 provinces and cities nationwide assigned by the Steering Committee, including Tay Ninh, An Giang, and Dong Thap provinces.
