On November 27, 2025, in Moscow, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) signed a Cooperation Agreement for the 2025–2030 period on training and scientific research. The agreement serves as an important legal basis for the two sides to deepen cooperation, contributing to the training of high-quality scientific and technological human resources and promoting key research directions in support of sustainable development. The two sides agreed to take doctoral and postdoctoral training and the development of joint research groups as pillars of cooperation; strengthen the exchange of lecturers, scientists and doctoral candidates; jointly organise international scientific conferences and co-supervise doctoral students; and work towards the gradual establishment of joint laboratories in areas of mutual strength.

During the discussion session on the implementation of the Agreement, Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, and Professor and Academician Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy, Rector of MGU, together with members of both delegations, exchanged and proposed priority cooperation directions for the coming period. These include chemistry and materials science and technology; biotechnology and molecular biology; artificial intelligence, data science and computational science; earth sciences, climate change and several interdisciplinary fields serving high-tech development. The two sides affirmed their commitment to closely coordinate to translate these priority areas into substantive joint research topics and projects.

Within the framework of the working session, Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, expressed his emotion at returning to Moscow State University, where he had studied at the Faculty of Chemistry in the 1980s. On the occasion of MGU’s 270th anniversary and the University’s honour of being awarded the Order of Labour Valour by the President of the Russian Federation, Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh warmly congratulated the University on its outstanding achievements and reaffirmed MGU’s status as a symbol of Russian science and education, with a special role in training elite intellectuals and developing major scientific schools. The VAST President emphasised that the signing of the Cooperation Agreement with MGU in this new period carries strategic significance for improving the quality of doctoral training and building a highly qualified scientific workforce for Vietnam.

For its part, Professor and Academician Viktor Antonovich Sadovnichy, Rector of MGU, warmly congratulated Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh on being elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences on November 25 at the Presidium session, expressing his pride in the achievements of an MGU alumnus such as Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh. Professor and Academician Sadovnichy highly appreciated VAST’s role in Vietnam’s scientific system, recognising the strong ties between MGU and generations of Vietnamese students and scientists; and he highly valued the consistent contributions of the VAST President in promoting scientific and educational cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation over many years. He affirmed that MGU stands ready to work closely with VAST to effectively implement the 2025–2030 Cooperation Agreement, especially in doctoral training and high-level scientific research.

As part of the programme, the VAST delegation visited the MGU Museum, which preserves 270 years of the University’s history and development. Through the exhibited documents and scientific achievements, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of MGU’s distinguished academic tradition and its special role in Russian and global science. The delegation also met Professor E. Karakhanov, former head of the department where VAST President Chau Van Minh completed his doctoral thesis. Hearing the professor’s emotional recollections of talented, sociable Vietnamese students who actively participated in sports activities, and his pride in the outstanding success of his former student – Professor and Academician Chau Van Minh – as well as the recent effective cooperation between the Faculty of Chemistry and VAST’s Institute of Chemistry and Institute of Materials Science, the delegation further recognised the continuation across generations of scientists and the deep bond between Vietnamese intellectuals and Russian science.

Taking place on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, and also as VAST celebrates its 50th anniversary – a journey of formation and development closely associated with strategic cooperation with the Russian Federation – the working session between VAST and MGU was not only a concrete cooperation event but also a highlight reflecting the long-standing connection between generations of scientists of VAST and MGU in particular and of the two countries in general, towards a future of sustainable and deep cooperation.
