VAST representative joins seminar of Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) on STEM Education 2018

After the selection process, the US diplomatic mission delegation selected 50 members from 10 ASEAN countries to attend the seminar of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) on STEM Education 2018, which took place from February 27, 2018 to March 3, 2018 in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh. Vietnam had 6 representatives, including Pham Thuy Hang, a specialist in the Department of Science Management and International Cooperation, the Graduate University of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. Ms. Pham Thuy Hang also represented Vietnam at the seminar, and won the STEM Park project.

YSEALI, an initiative of former US President Barack Obama, is an outstanding program of the US Government. It focuses on important topics that young people in the region are interested in, including citizens’ active spirit, environment and natural resource management, start-up and economic development. YSEALI looks to strengthen leadership and connectivity within ASEAN, deepen links with young leaders in confronting key regional and global challenges, and promote the relationship between US people and ASEAN young leaders.

Pham Thuy Hang participates in the report and discussion on STEM education in ASEAN

The US diplomatic mission selected 50 YSEALI members from 10 ASEAN countries to attend the seminar, aiming to promote STEM education for youth in the region. Participating in this seminar, Ms. Pham Thuy Hang was also invited to report and discuss Vietnam"s challenges in current STEM education, and proposed practical solutions to the plenary session “Gaps in STEM education in ASEAN".

Members were very active and focused on developing projects that promote STEM education. Ending the competition at the Phnom Penh Olympic Stadium, Pham Thuy Hang"s STEM Park project was selected as one of the three winning projects and received seed funding from the Embassy of the United States. According to Ms Hang, the STEM Park is expected to be implemented in the near future with the cooperation of YSEALI members in Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Myanmar.
