VAST President congratulates Prof. Dam Thanh Son for Dirac 2018 Award
On August 13, 2018, Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), held a meeting to congratulate Prof. Dam Thanh Son on his receiving the Dirac 2018 Award. This was the first time a Vietnamese scientist was presented this award, becoming the happiness and pride of the Vietnamese scientist circle in general and VAST in particular. President Chau Van Minh also expressed his hope that Prof. Son will contribute more and more to promote the development of Vietnamese physics.

The study of Prof. Son is honoured for interdisciplinary characteristics, both in methodology and object of study, in both micro-physics to macro-physics, from particle physics to dense environmental physics, and being a bridge linking basic science with materials science and other applied sciences. One of these studies establishes the relationship between viscosity and entropy of a large amount of highly interactive environments, and this result has been experimentally verified. This may be the premise for the next big prize.
Dam Thanh Son was born in 1969 in Hanoi during the war, in a family of intellectuals. He is a former student of Mathematics and Informatics, High School of Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, the Vietnam National University, Hanoi. He won the gold medal at the 1984 International Maths Olympiad in Prague (Czech Republic) with an absolute score of 42/42 when he was only 15. He graduated from Moscow State University in 1991 and received a Dr. certificate in physics from the Moscow Institute for Nuclear Research in 1995. From 1995-1999, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Washington, Seattle (1995-1997) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (1997-1999). From 1999-2002: He was appointed as a professor at Columbia University, and a fellow at the RIKEN-BNL Research Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), USA. He returned to Seattle in 2002, and was appointed Professor of Physics Faculty at the University of Washington and a senior fellow at the University’s Institute for Nuclear Physics. In 2008, when the International Physics Olympiad was held in Vietnam, he was one of three Vietnamese physics professors invited to join the Organizing Committee. Since September 2012, he has been a professor at the University of Chicago in the USA. Dam Thanh Son studies theoretical physics, mainly in particle physics, nuclear physics and the applications of string theory. In 2014 he became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was elected a member of the US National Academy of Sciences in the same year.
