VAST – IRD symposium on marine sciences

11/02/2014
On November 28th and 29th 2013, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Institute of Research for Development of the Republic of France (IRD) coordinated to organize a symposium on marine sciences in the northern port city of Hai Phong.

The event drew the participation of Prof. Chau Van Minh, president of VAST; Dr. Nguyen Van Thanh, secretary of Hai Phong City Party Committee; Dr. Jean-Pascal Torréton, representative of IRD in Vietnam and more than 100 delegates who are scientists and researchers from IRD and 12 institutes under VAST.

The symposium created an opportunity for scientists and researchers from VAST and IRD to exchange research results as well as new research ideas. In addition, young scientists from VAST also had an opportunity to learn from IRD colleagues, and create a premise to develop cooperation with experts from IRD in particular and French experts in general.

The symposium published an over 400-page year book in English with 42 reports which are research results and new research ideas of Vietnamese and French scientists and researchers. The report topics are about the quality, structure and intensity of sea water at river ports and gates, sediment processes, biochemical compounds and biological diversity. Based on this, two major researching trends are proposed, including the interaction between sea-land and chemistry, geography and biology under the impact of human effect on the environment.

In the speech at the opening ceremony, president Chau Van Minh said that thanks the symposium, he hoped that VAST and IRD cooperation will be strengthened, especially cooperation in prioritized fields such as projects on climate change, natural disasters, ecosystem and environment in the context of sustainable development. The two sides will continue co-organize symposiums to access results in science, and discuss further plans on scientific issues of mutual interest.
