USTH holds opening ceremony of 2021-2022 school year

On the afternoon of October 27, 2021, Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH) - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology held the Opening Ceremony of 2021-2022 school year. In order to ensure the regulations on COVID-19 pandemic prevention, the Opening Ceremony was held online via Zoom and with a limited number of live event attendees. The Opening Ceremony is not only an important milestone, opening a new journey on the way of knowledge conquest of new students, but also an opportunity for the staff, lecturers and students of the University to look back on their achievements in 2020-2021 school year and set goals for the upcoming year. In the ceremony, USTH honored students and freshmen with excellent academic achievements who received USTH scholarships in 2021-2022 school year.

Along with the exciting atmosphere of the opening day, on behalf of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), there is Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh - President of VAST; on the side of the French Embassy is Mr. Nicolas Warnery- French Ambassador to Vietnam; On the side of the Union of Universities, USTH Consortium has Prof. Bernard Legube- President of USTH Consortium; On the side of USTH, there are Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest - Principal, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Thi Mai Thanh - Rector and representatives of partner units and all staff, lecturers, students and doctoral students of the University.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest, Principal, congratulated and thanked nearly 800 new students, masters and doctoral students in 2021-2022 school year for choosing USTH for the upcoming study journey. Despite having to start the new school year with online learning, the Professor expressed his confidence that Gen 12 will overcome difficulties and quickly catch up with the new teaching methods, knowledge and learning environment at USTH. Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest also emphasized that in the digital transformation revolution 4.0, Vietnam is rising strongly to become one of the fast-growing Asian countries in science, technology and engineering. USTH will be a reliable fulcrum, support and accompany students on the upcoming important journey of knowledge acquisition and career orientation, providing them with not only the knowledge but also the necessary skills to confidently enter the future labor market.

Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest said that the construction project of the University in Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park has officially started, marking an important turning point in the development journey of USTH. The project is architecturally designed with Vietnamese and French cultural symbols, following the model of French and European universities with modern functional areas including lecture halls, practice laboratories, research laboratories, library, gymnasium and dormitory. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

The year 2021 marks many new developments of USTH in teaching and researching. Particularly, in terms of training, the University’s position has been increasingly affirmed and enhanced, reflected in the number of students entering university programs this year increased by 70% compared to 2020, the highest since its establishment, in which there are many candidates who won high prizes in the excellent student competitions at the City/Province, National, and International levels from gifted high schools in many provinces across the country. In addition, the University continues to promote its training strengths in science-technology-engineering disciplines by opening two new training disciplines: Data Science and Automotive Engineering, bringing the total number of majors in undergraduate programs of the University to 16. In terms of research, USTH has increased the number of scientific articles and publications by 30%, ranking third among the research institutions of VAST. Currently, an average of 1 lecturer of USTH publishes 1.2 articles in the SCIE list per year, which is close to the international publishing capacity of regional and international universities.

USTH is also actively coordinating with French universities to deploy training programs that allow excellent students in Chemistry, Biotechnology Agro-Medical-Pharmaceutical, Information and Communication Technology to have the opportunity for academic exchange for the last 1 year in France.

Last school year, the complicated COVID-19 pandemic in Vietnam interrupted training and research activities of universities across the country. In that context, USTH has implemented many synchronous and drastic measures to join hands in disease prevention and at the same time ensure the quality of teaching and research.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, highly appreciated the efforts and achievements of the Board of Directors and all staff, lecturers and students of USTH. Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh thanked the French Embassy in Vietnam and French Government for their courageous support for USTH during the first 10 years of establishment and development, and hoped that the University would continue to receive further support in training and research to help USTH become an excellent research university in the region, contributing to the cooperation relationship between Vietnam and France.

Mr. Nicolas Warnery, French Ambassador to Vietnam, congratulated new students on entering a university that is reaching a mature stage of development in training and research. With close cooperation with French universities and research organizations, Mr.  Nicolas Warnery believes that USTH is the "correct" choice of enthusiastic young people who are passionate about science - technology -engineering in their future career path.

From the French online site, on behalf of USTH Consortium, Prof. Bernard Legube, President of USTH Consortium, affirmed that the Union of French Universities and Research Organizations will continue to strongly support USTH in training and research, to create favorable conditions for the University to develop, towards the goal set by the Vietnamese and French governments. Prof. Bernard Legube emphasized that USTH Consortium will accompany USTH to build bachelor's programs as well as maintain and improve the quality of double degree master's programs with French universities, and at the same time increase internship opportunities and Academic exchange in France for USTH students.

On behalf of Gen 12, Pham Gia Minh Tu, an Applied Environmental Science major, expressed his pride in becoming a new student of USTH and believes that “USTH will be the ideal place for me to entrust my youth as well as ambition to become a successful environmental activist in the future.”

The Opening Ceremony is also an opportunity to honor individuals and groups with outstanding achievements and positive contributions to the University’s  activities in the past school year. In 2021-2022 school year, USTH spends the highest scholarship funding ever with a total value of up to 6,8 billion VND for more than 300 students, trainees and doctoral students. USTH awarded a full scholarship for a 3-year university program worth 140 million VND to freshman Phan Ta Tinh Tri, the first prize of the National Excellent Student Competition in Chemistry 2020-2021, directly admitted into the University's Bachelor of Chemistry program.

On this occasion, strategic partners also showed their support to USTH with scholarships for students: Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Agribank) awarded 16 scholarships to students, the valedictorians for the entrance examination of the majors; Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) awarded 5 scholarships to support students with difficult circumstances; VMO Holdings Technology Joint Stock Company awarded 20 million VND scholarships to excellent students of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology; and Thai Minh Pharmaceutical Company awarded 20 million VND scholarships to excellent students of the Faculty of Life Sciences .

At the end of the ceremony, Prof. Jean-Marc Lavest- Principal beat the drum to open the new school year with many new ambitions and goals of USTH teachers and students.
