Update on preliminary results of a joint Vietnam-France oceanographic survey in Vietnamese waters by scientific research vessel ANTEA
The scientific research ship ANTEA docked at Nha Rong port, Ho Chi Minh City
Continuing joint research activities in this field, while celebrating the 80th anniversary of IRD's establishment and the 25th anniversary of cooperation, VAST and IRD launched a joint Vietnam-France oceanographic survey in coastal waters. Vietnam coast, using the French scientific research ship ANTEA starting in the waters of Hai Phong - Quang Ninh and ending in the waters of Tra Vinh - Soc Trang during the period from May 28 to July 11, 2024. Here is a scientific activity within the framework of the project "Research on material transport from the continent and their effects on the environment and ecosystems of Vietnam's coastal waters", referred to as PLUME (Particle transport along river). plumes and their impact on coastal ecosystems off Vietnam).
On June 26, 2024, VAST and IRD held an event to introduce the PLUME project, report preliminary results of the survey and update the content that will continue to be deployed in the southern sea area at the ANTEA ship. anchored at Nha Rong port, Ho Chi Minh City. Attending the event were Mr. Olivier Brochet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France in Vietnam, Chief Representative of IRD in Vietnam, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of VAST, IRD Office in Vietnam and Vietnamese and French scientists within the framework of the project. Associate Professor, PhD. Nguyen Van Quan, Director of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment - VAST, the host unit of the Vietnamese side of the survey, reviewed the journey of more than 20 years of VAST-IRD cooperation in the field of marine resources and environment; Main research and training results from the 2014 joint survey between the two sides as a basis for implementing the 2024 survey. Some data on marine physical processes, sediments, and bio-geological processes - Chemistry and optics in the coastal estuary, the material flow transported from the continent (river plume) has just been collected by Dr. Marc Teddeti, IRD survey team leader and PhD. Vu Duy Vinh, Head of the VAST survey team, updated at the meeting. Ambassador Olivier Brochet highly appreciated these long-term cooperation activities between VAST and IRD, and expressed that he will continue to support with the French Embassy in Vietnam and other related French organizations so that both sides can Conveniently conduct cooperative activities. Concluding the seminar, Associate Professor. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of the Academy, suggested that VAST and IRD scientists continue to coordinate closely, analyze, evaluate and share to further clarify the nature of the transport process of organic substances. from the continent to coastal waters, building a scientific basis to create a foundation for future research, contributing to solving the problem of sustainable management of Vietnam's coastal resources and environment for development. national economic and social development.

After the event, the ANTEA ship and Vietnamese - French scientists continued to carry out research according to the licensed survey roadmap and are expected to complete and sail back to France on July 12, 2024.
ANTEA is a small scientific research ship, belonging to the French Oceanographic Fleet, with a length of about 35m, a width of about 11.9m and moving at a speed of about 18.5km/h. The ANTEA ship is equipped with the latest generation of rapid measuring equipment (ADCP, CTD, SIMRAD, SBE21-38, ...) and modern sampling facilities. On board there are 02 specialized laboratories (Oceanography, Environment and marine biodiversity), with workplaces for 10 scientists and 13 crew members. |
