On January 20th 2012, the State President signed a decision on presenting prizes for 32 works in five fields of humanities and social sciences, natural science, technical science, agricultural science, and medical and pharmaceutical science. 12 of them were presented the Ho Chi Minh prize and 20 were presented the State prize. Among the 32 works, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology was honoured to have one work winning the Ho Chi Minh prize and one work winning the State prize. The work that won Ho Chi Minh prize was the Vietnam fauna and Vietnam flora, Red book and Vietnam Red List. The work that won the State prize was Exploring and Reasonably using Vietnamese marine biological natural resources in order to create valuable products for life. The works “Vietnam fauna and Vietnam flora”, “Red book and Vietnam Red List” were compiled by the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources. They are the result of investigation and study on biological resources and biological diversity in Vietnam since the beginning of the century. The works drew the participation of scientists from institutes and universities in Vietnam and foreign countries. These results are an outstanding special scientific achievement in basic investigation, inventory and assessment of biological resources, preservation of natural biological diversity in Vietnam. It was implemented by units under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, including the Institute of Marine Biochemistry, the Institute of Natural Products Chemistry Products, Nha Trang Institute of Technology Research and Application, and the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources. This work establishes the new research orientation for marine biochemistry in Vietnam. The basic result is to provide a general document about groups of medicine, areas containing medicine, the active extracting process, and figures on biologically active samples, new compounds and biologically active compounds. Moreover, the work discovered hundreds of compounds, including compounds having a new chemical structure first found in nature, making a great contribution to the treasure of marine compounds in the world and contributing to popularizing and bringing information about studies of Vietnam’s marine environment to the world.
