Tran Dai Nghia Award - Award of innovation

29/07/2019
On May 9, 2019, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Professor and Academic Chau Van Minh approved the Decision to present the 2019 Tran Dai Nghia Awards to 10 authors of 4 outstanding projects.

Tran Dai Nghia Award of VAST aims to honor scientists with outstanding achievements in natural science and technology, who directly organize the application of such achievements to contribute to the cause of national socio-economic development and security and defense.

This year"s award received care from many authors nationwide. Through the short-listed round, the Award Council selected 23 works in three areas for evaluation, which included 7 works in mechanics and physics; 6 works in life sciences; and 10 works in other sciences.

Three specialized science councils gathering leading scientists were established to assess the works. The science council specialized in mechanics and physics has 5 members, chaired by Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu; the council of life sciences has 05 members, chaired by Prof.Dr. Truong Nam Hai; and council of other sciences has 07 members, chaired by Professor and Academic Dang Vu Minh. Each specialized science council held 2-3 meetings. Each project is read, commented, and given comments by the scientists in the council. The council scored and ballot secret voting to select outstanding works and submit them to the Award Council for consideration. In order to have enough information to provide to the Award Council’s decision, the standing body of the Award carried out fact-finding trips to the units and localities applying the work results, before making reports to the Award Council.

The specialized science councils and the Award Council agreed that the works this year have high quality of science and technology, which are the result of many years of research and the combination of many scientists. Some works based on the research results of many authors, including foreign authors, are granted international patents, but have not yet received this award because they have not been applied in Vietnam.

On May 13, 2019, VAST organized a press conference to announce 4 award winning works. Information on the four works follows:

Work 1: “Research on developing technological process for producing A/H5N1 avian influenza vaccine in Vietnam” by the authors: Prof.Dr. Le Tran Binh; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Duy Khang from the VAST Institute of Biotechnology; Dr. Tran Xuan Hanh, Central Veterinary Drug Joint Stock Company, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The work is an effort of scientists in studying the process of producing A/H5N1 influenza vaccine for poultry for 6 years (from 2006-2012). This is the first project to research and successfully produce H5N1 avian influenza vaccine with the quality to be used on an industrial scale, first to ensure partial supply of vaccines, before completely replacing imported vaccines for poultry vaccinnation ationwide.

Work 2: “Development of Special Composite Materials for Defence and Security Applications” by the authors: Dr. Nguyen Van Thao, VAST Center for Hi-tech Development; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Doan Dinh Phuong, VAST Institute of Materials Science; and Dr. Le Van Thu, Department of Equipment and Logistics, Ministry of Public Security.
The work consists of 02 components: Component 1 is a project “Research and development of technology for manufacturing durable, light composite materials, applied in the production of devices and specialised tools equipped for soldiers”.
The component has successfully researched and manufactured materials systems, including: 1) Polymenanocomposite materials based on plastic materials (PA6, HDPE) with nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, nanoclay, MgO, TiO2); 2) Nanocomposite materials based on fiber (carbon fiber, aramid fiber, UHMWPE fiber), foundation plastic (epoxy, phenolformaldehyde, poly vinyl butiral) with nanomaterials (carbon nanotubes, nanoclay, MgO nanoparticles, TiO2); 3) Durable high-density aluminum oxide ceramics with nanomaterials (nanoclay, MgO, TiO2 nanoparticles). The material has characteristics: impact resistance, strong anti-impact force (bulletproof).
From the above materials, the authors successfully manufactured a set of products which include 1) pistol-resistant K54 life vest, 2) AK47 submachine gun bullets life vest, 3) bullet-proof sniper rifles bulletproof reaching US NIJ 01.01.06 standard; 4) Shockproof helmet; 5) Shockproof protective sleeve; 6) soft cladding foot guards, AK47 submachine gun bulletproof plate. The products using new materials help reduce volume to only 80 to 85% compared to foreign products without any changes in the function of bulletproof and impact-resistant features. All products’ bulletproof ability have been tested in reality by using standard real bullets.

Work 3: “Research and development of industrial and medical hazardous waste treatment technology” by the authors: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Van Tuyen, the Institute of Environmental Technology; main engineer Mai Trong Chinh from VAST; senior researcher and Dr. Nguyen The Dong, Vietnam Environment Administration, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
Throughout 15 years of research, experimentation and continuous improvement, the authors have successfully built and put into practice the technology and the device system VHI-18B and IET-BF which have been installed at more than 50 medical and industrial hazardous solid waste treatment facilities and more than 25 medical wastewater treatment facilities across the country. The outstanding advantages of these treatment technologies compared to other waste treatment technologies being applied in our country are low investment and treatment costs, simple operation, and efficient treatment. The authors have 02 patents for invention, and 01 patent for useful solutions on technologies applied in production.

Work 4: “Research on rice breeding to serve the Mekong Delta” of Prof.Dr. Nguyen Thi Lang, High Agricultural Technology Research Institute for Mekong Delta, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The work is a scientific conclusion of more than 100 topics on rice production, genetic breeding and rice breeding in the Mekong Delta.
The highlight of the work was the successful selection of salinity-tolerant rice varieties originating from the local rice variety called "ghost rice" in Dong Thap Muoi. The author combines the resistant ability of the local rice with high yielding rice varieties to create a new rice variety. Intensive scientific research projects on rice genetics, rice genome are highly practical, contributing practically to domestic rice production development and improving the position of Vietnam"s rice production industry in the world.

With the success demonstrated in the results of research and application of the four above works, 10 authors were honored with the highest award of science and technology and application by the VAST President - Tran Dai Nghia Award 2019. Besides the Tran Dai Nghia medals, cups, certificates of award, VAST presented VND200 million to each work from the budget and financial support.

Accompanying VAST in this year"s award ceremony were enterprises: the Vietnam Sturgeon Joint Stock Company; Thai Minh Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company; GoldHealth Vietnam Pharmaceutical Company; International Equipment and Technical Services Limited Company; Thai Hung Trading Joint Stock Company; and Viettronics Tan Binh Company.

The Award Ceremony took place on May 17, 2019, together with a series of science and technology activities to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day and the 44th anniversary of VAST establishment. The event was attended by representatives of the Party, State, ministries, departments and branches and hundreds of delegates who are scientists all over the country.
