The Institute of Oceanography opens a showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resources

On June 8, the Institute of Oceanography under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) organized the opening ceremony of the showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resources. The activity was held to mark the World Ocean Day in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa province. It was also an leading event during the Vietnam Sea and Island Week – an annual event which was organized from June 5th -8th.

The opening ceremony of the showroom welcomed Mr. Le Thanh Quang, Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Khanh Hoa provincial Party Committee; Mr. Nguyen Van Duc, Standing Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment; Mr. Pham Van Linh, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee Commission for Popularization and Education; Ms Nguyen Thi Xuan Thu, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development; Mr. Le Duc Vinh, Deputy Chairman of the Khanh Hoa provincial People’s Committee. VAST representatives included Professors Nguyen Dinh Cong and Duong Ngoc Hai, VAST Deputy President. Representatives from central agencies, sectors and unions, armed forces, coastal localities and departments in Khanh Hoa province also attended the ceremony.

The Institute of Oceanography, under VAST, is an age-old sea study agency not only of Vietnam, but also of the region. The building of the showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resources was made thanks to the will and aspirations of the institute’s leaders and staff over the past several years. With the support and direction of VAST leaders, especially Professor Chau Van Minh, VAST President, through a period of study, discussion, design and construction, the showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resources was built in the tunnel area of the Institute of Oceanography.

What are exhibited in the showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resource centre are plentiful and diverse, from historical documents on general scientific studies and those of the Institute of Oceanography, in particular studies on coastal areas and  Spratly and Paracel Islands, to creature and geological specimen collected through these studies. In addition, the showroom on Paracel and Spratly sea and island resource has an area to raise sea creatures which used to live on Spratly – Paracel Islands which are now tamed and reproduced in the Institute of Oceanography.

The Museum of Oceanography is an outstanding destination in Nha Trang city for tourists. Each year it welcomes hundreds of thousands of domestic and international tourists, including tens of thousands of pupils, students and youths. Therefore, this is a place to educate the community on sea resources and contribute to promoting Vietnam’s diplomacy on sea and on the island.
