The Institute of Life Sciences Organizes a Scientific Workshop Celebrating the 51st Anniversary of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology

29/05/2026
On May 20, 2026, the Institute of Life Sciences – Ho Chi Minh City Branch successfully organized a scientific workshop program to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST). This is a practical activity to commemorate the 136th anniversary of the birth of the great President Ho Chi Minh (May 19, 1890 - May 19, 2026); respond to Vietnam Science, Technology, and Innovation Day (May 18); and celebrate the 51st anniversary milestone of the establishment of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (May 20, 1975 - May 20, 2026).

An overview of the scientific workshop

The workshop took place in a lively and open academic atmosphere, attracting a large number of experts and scientists from various fields. Prof. Dr. Hoang Nghia Son – Director of the Institute of Life Sciences attended and chaired the workshop.

Prof. Dr. Hoang Nghia Son stated that this year's workshop recorded a surge of in-depth reports, clearly reflecting the trend of interdisciplinary research in the fields of environment, biotechnology, medicinal materials, and life sciences... focusing on solving core practical problems toward the goals of sustainable development and modern technology application.

In the field of environment and natural resources: The studies addressed solutions for urban rainwater harvesting suited to tropical climate characteristics; assessed the diverse picture of higher vascular flora in the limestone mountains of Ha Tien - Kien Luong; and developed a method for modeling suspended sediment dynamics in the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta under the impact of the tropical monsoon climate. The research results are expected to provide a solid scientific basis for water resource management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change adaptation.

In the field of biotechnology and health sciences: A series of spearhead studies were presented, typically including the application of modern Shotgun metagenomics technology to analyze microbial communities in the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve; and the establishment of a mass spectrometry database to aid the rapid identification of molds using the MALDI-TOF MS method. In addition, highly applicable studies such as developing healthcare products from natural medicinal materials, exploring the effects of monochromatic light on plants, or creating drug-resistant leukemia cell models under simulated microgravity conditions have opened up new advancements for biomedicine.

According to Prof. Dr. Hoang Nghia Son, the workshop not only reflected the spirit of innovation but also affirmed the responsibility of the intellectual team at the Institute of Life Sciences toward the country's science. The success of the event demonstrated the capacity for technology application and the connection between basic research and practice, while opening up strategic cooperations and shaping breakthrough directions for the future.
