The 5th Earth Sciences Youth Scientific Conference 2024

On November 28, 2024, the 5th Earth Sciences Youth Scientific Conference 2024 took place in the atmosphere of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, with the co-organization of 5 units: Youth Union of the Institute of Geology, Youth Union of the Institute of Geography, Youth Union of the Institute of Geology and Marine Geophysics, Youth Union of the Institute of Geophysics and Youth Union of the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment, in which the host unit this year is the Youth Union of the Institute of Geology.

Attending the Conference were Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Member of the Party Committee of the Central Agencies, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Vice President of the VAST and Director of the Institute of Geology; representatives of the Board of Directors, the Scientific Council of the units in the Earth Sciences Bloc; representatives of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union of the Academy; scientists and a large number of youth union members and young researchers from the units in the Bloc.

The conference is an annual youth science forum in the Earth Sciences Bloc, an opportunity for young cadres to exchange information, introduce achievements, research results and scientific and technological activities; enhance opportunities for cooperation and scientific research; thereby building a youth science forum in the Bloc. The conference can be considered a model for linking and coordinating together to carry out the most important political task of the Youth Union in the Academy, which is scientific research and technological development.

 

Speaking at the Conference, Prof. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh commented that after being held five times, the quality of reports at the Conference and registered reports has improved, and many reports can be developed into publications in specialized journals. The Vice President hopes that the Youth Union members will continue to study to improve their professional qualifications, actively and proactively build scientific activities, and create close ties between Youth Union members in the Bloc.

In 2024, the Conference Organizing Committee received 15 scientific articles from five units in the Bloc; of which, five reports were selected to be presented directly at the Conference, including:

Report 1: “Some characteristics of landslides due to the influence of Yagi bank circulation in the Northern mountainous region, Vietnam” (Dr. Pham Van Tien, Institute of Geology).

Report 2: “Research on the near-surface geological structure of the Song Da fault zone at the epicenter of the Moc Chau earthquake M=5.3 on July 27, 2020 using multipolar imaging method”. (MSc. Ta Van Dung, Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics).

Report 3: “Research on assessing the level of damage caused by saltwater intrusion in aquifers in coastal districts of Ninh Thuan province in the context of climate change”. (MSc. Tran Thi Thuy Huong, Institute of Geophysics).

Report 4: “Application of SWAT model combined with satellite rainfall to assess water resources of Lam River basin”. (MSc. Dang Thi Hong Nhung, Institute of Geography).

Report 5: “Study on simulation of formation of maximum turbidity zone at Cam-Nam Trieu estuary”. (MSc. Nguyen Thanh Duong, Institute of Marine Resources and Environment).

The conference was a great success, the reports received high appreciation and many valuable comments and contributions from scientists, helping the youth union members to be more complete and confident. The conference also demonstrated the enthusiasm and scientific research spirit of the youth union members in the Earth Sciences Block and the youth union members of the VAST.
