The 20-year journey of establishment and development of the Department of Application and Development of technology
At the ceremony
Twenty years ago, under Decree 27/2004/ND-CP dated January 16, 2004, the government renamed the National Center for Natural Science and Technology to Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (now known as VAST), marking the establishment of DADT. This organization served as an essential support to the President of VAST, laying the groundwork for the Academy's technology application and deployment activities as a leading research institution in the nation. DADT was tasked with the significant mission of promoting the application and deployment of science and technology from VAST to serve the country's socio-economic development. This was a challenging endeavor, especially given that VAST at the time was primarily focused on fundamental research.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Tien Dung, Director of DADT, presents a report summarizing 20 years of development
Over the past 20 years, through initiative, creativity and a spirit of continuous learning, DADT has gradually asserted its position. With close guidance and favorable conditions provided by VAST leadership, combined with the concerted efforts of DADT staff across different periods, the division has achieved numerous noteworthy accomplishments in various fields such as applying, deploying and commercializing VAST’s scientific and technological research outcomes; addressing scientific and technological issues as requested by ministries, sectors, localities and enterprises; publicizing and promoting VAST’s products; and supporting VAST scientists in gradually enhancing awareness, knowledge, skills and experience in intellectual property activities.
DADT's notable contributions include advising VAST leadership on strategic orientations and formulating policies to promote research activities linked to application and technology transfer. Noteworthy initiatives include Resolution 159/DUVHL/2017 of VAST’s Party Committee, which strengthened application and deployment efforts during 2016–2020 with a vision towards 2030, and regulations managing four key tasks in technology application and deployment. DADT also developed the Tran Dai Nghia Award Regulation to honor scientists with outstanding applied research works, thereby fostering strong motivation for scientists and managers within VAST to pursue innovation. The division contributed to a significant increase in VAST's intellectual property rights, especially from 2018 onward, making VAST the leading institution in Vietnam in terms of patents and utility solutions. For instance, in 2023, VAST secured 73 patents, leading the nation and accounting for 60% of the total patents from universities and research institutes nationwide. Many research results have been successfully applied and transferred to enterprises. Furthermore, DADT's innovation and commercialization activities have been recognized domestically and internationally. For two consecutive years, 2020 and 2021, VAST was named the "Innovation Leader in South and Southeast Asia" by Clarivate (UK). DADT has also received numerous accolades and high evaluations from organizations like WIPO and the Science, Technology and Environment Committee of the National Assembly.
Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, VAST President, presents the Certificate of Merit to DADT
In recognition of these achievements, on the occasion of its 20th anniversary, VAST awarded DADT a Certificate of Merit for its active contributions to the development of science and technology in connection with the country's socio-economic growth, thus contributing to VAST’s overall development.
Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, VAST President addresses the ceremony
During the ceremony, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh commended DADT for its achievements and expressed hope that the division would continue its significant contributions to technology application and deployment, enhancing its role and position while contributing to VAST’s comprehensive development.
