Technology for producing Omega-3 enriched chicken eggs

Omega-3 is an important fatty acid for the human body. It contributes significantly to the prevention of heart disease, reducing triglyceride level in blood, lowering cholesterol, prevention of cancer and diabetes, improvement of memory and reducing the risk of Alzheimers. Omega-3 is essential for the development of brain and sight of the foetus.  

Since the 1990s, there has been a lot of studies of Omega-3 on the world, especially the studies to create Omega-3 enriched products. Many products have been commercialized in the market such as: Omega-3 enhanced milk, mayonnaise soup, Omega-3 enriched eggs. These products are available in most advanced countries, including the USA, Australia, Canada, Japan and in Europe.

In Vietnam, Scientists from Department of Animal biotechnology under the Institute of Tropical Biology have studied successfully Omega-3 enriched chicken eggs. These eggs contain from 5 to 8 times higher level of Omega-3  than the Omega-3 level of normal eggs.

Diets directly affect the fatty acid content of eggs, so it can be enriched Omega-3 in eggs through choosing Omega-3 enriched diets for egg-laying hens. This method does not affect the health condition or laying capacity of hens, or the quality of the eggs.
