Study on experimentally making health tool disinfection cabinet by ozone air

17/07/2012

In 1997, the Ministry of Health officially proposed regulations on "Anti-Infection in Hospital Regulations" and built an Anti-infective Department within the hospital organization system. However, according to a survey of the Ministry of Health, only 15% of anti-infective departments operate effectively. There are many sources of nosocomial infection including clinical devices, behavior and awareness of healthcare workers, elements of patients and other objective elements. Clinical devices, the hands of healthcare workers, patients themselves and objective elements are considered to be the primary sources accounting for the majority of bacterial transfer between parties.

Chemical and heat treatment are the traditional and most used methods of disinfection. These methods do still have disadvantages. For example, the use of chemicals can cause environmental pollution and can have negative effects on people’s health. Their manufacture processing time and cost or also both prohibative. The use of heat is only suitable for heat-resistance devices. In Vietnam, only few of the larger hospitals have been provided with foreign manufactured disinfection equipment. Their number is limited by costing considerations. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a study on producing disinfection equipment using less toxic materials and fewer and cheaper composite materials, resulting in the more suitable initial cost.

In the 19th century, ozone became known for possessing strong antiseptic capabilities and was subsequently utilised to disinfect running water in many countries around the world. Ozone is widely used as a disinfectant, especially in the healthcare sector (air disinfection, hand water disinfection, reused health device disinfection). Disinfection by ozone has more advantages than traditional methods, such as not causing harm to the immediate environment or users, rapid treatment process, no cost for material consumption because materials used for disinfection process are created from oxy (pure or in the air).

OMeS – 150 Disinfection Cabinet is operated according to a cycle including three operation processes running for a maximum time of 180 minutes (this time can be changed by users). The first process is called the ‘ozone charge process’ because at that time, ozone is pumped into the room of healthcare devices. Then, ozone is kept in the room to disinfect the devices. Finally, ozone is disposed of and let out. During the operation, if ozone is leaked out, the surrounded environment (ozone concentration exceeds safe limit concentration according to TCVN 5937:2005), this equipment will be automatically disposed of and the ozone released to ensure security for consumers.

The Disinfection Cabinet by ozone made by the Institute of Physics has prominent features such as the ability to exterminate microorganism on the surface of healthcare devices ensuring their safe reuse; operates safely and automatically; convenient and easy to operate; effective failsafe systems should anything go wrong; provides safe working environment for workers during operation; can be used with both heat and non-heat resistant products. The product was piloted at Huu Nghi (Friendship) and 354 other hospitals, and received positive feedback from users.

Overall, the new Disinfection Cabinet has provided many advantages that should be considered by all "contact" healthcare institutions as an essential asset that will provide considerable savings by reducing the negative effects and costs related to nosocomial infection and reduce the negative side-effects associated with other disinfection methods... The work’s success has practical significance in nosocomial infection in health establishments in Vietnam at present.
