Strengthening training and research links in the field of semiconductor materials & microchips between the Institute of Materials Science and the University of Electricity

10/06/2025
In the period of strong transformation of the fourth industrial revolution, technologies such as 5G, IA, IoT, cloud computing and especially semiconductor and microchip technology have become the key foundation in all industries, so training a team of high-quality human resources for the semiconductor industry in general and electronics and computer engineering in particular has become an urgent need. In order to strengthen training and research links, especially in the field of semiconductor materials and microchips, on May 12, 2025 in Hanoi, the Institute of Materials Science - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation with the University of Electricity.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding was attended by Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam - Director of the Institute of Materials Science - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Chau - President of the University of Electricity; Representatives of leaders of agencies and enterprises (including VNPT Technology, Viettel Semiconductor Technology Department, FPT Telecom, MobiFone Service Company Region 1, Pavana Company); along with the participation of the Board of Directors of the University of Electricity, scientists of the Institute of Materials Science, lecturers, experts and students of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications of the University of Electricity.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Dinh Van Chau - President of University of Electricity delivered the opening speech

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Van Chau - President of the University of Electricity said that the University of Electricity is always proactive in developing its scale, improving the quality of training and scientific research, digital transformation in education, expanding training programs associated with core technologies, in which the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications is one of the pioneers with key majors such as Semiconductor Materials & Microcircuits, Electronics and Telecommunications and Computer Engineering. President Dinh Van Chau emphasized: "No educational institution can develop sustainably if it stands outside of connections with businesses, research institutes and society". Through the memorandums of understanding on cooperation with businesses and research institutes, the University of Electricity identifies the core contents including: Coordinating to develop training programs associated with practice, updating new technologies; Supporting students in internships, business experience, career orientation; Organizing research – development – technology transfer activities, cooperating in implementing scientific and technological tasks; Participating in consulting, teaching, short-term training and improving professional qualifications for lecturers and students; Building an innovation ecosystem between the School – Enterprises – Research Institutes.

At the signing ceremony, Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam - Director of the Institute of Materials Science said that the Institute of Materials Science is one of the leading specialized institutes in the country in the field of materials science and technology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The Institute is also a high-quality postgraduate training institution with an average of 50 PhD students working regularly at the Institute and dozens of graduate students coming to study and do their graduation theses every year. The Institute's researchers are also guest lecturers at major universities in Vietnam such as Hanoi National University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Thai Nguyen University, Academy of Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology Hanoi (USTH), ...

Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam - Director of the Institute of Materials Science speaks

Within the framework of cooperation with the University of Electricity, especially in the field of training semiconductor students for the Electronics - Telecommunications industry, the Institute of Materials Science will participate in contributing to a number of strong works including:

  • Sharing knowledge and experience: The Institute has many scientists who are knowledgeable and trained in the field of semiconductors and some fields that the University is training, ready to participate in the teaching process, guiding PhD students, Masters and students to carry out research topics related to semiconductor materials and semiconductor technology; supporting lecturers and young staff of the University to directly participate in the research directions and laboratories of the Institute.
  • Support facilities for training and scientific research: The Institute will create conditions for students of the University of Electricity to have the opportunity to practice and research in the Institute's laboratories, and access modern equipment. The University's teaching staff participating in research cooperation will have access to the Institute's research equipment.
  • Promoting joint research projects: The Institute will coordinate with lecturers, young staff, PhD students and students of the University of Electricity to implement highly applicable research projects in the field of semiconductors in particular as well as in fields related to electrical engineering in which the Institute has strengths, contributing to solving practical problems of the industry.
  • Promoting scientific publication: The Institute will support the school to promote international publication (both in terms of quality and quantity of published works); as well as IP registration (patents, GPHI).
