As part of the series of activities to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day 18/5 and the establishment of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) 20/5, on 10/5/2024, VAST has cooperated with the Ministry of Science and Technology to organize a workshop and seminar "Cooperation and development between UNESCO Natural Science Centers and Programmes" to share experiences and develop the International Physics Centre and the International Centre for Mathematical Research and Training (Form II Centre under the auspices of UNESCO), and discuss connection with professional programmes in the Subcommittee on Natural Sciences as well as other specialized Subcommittees in UNESCO.

Overview of the event

Opening the event, Vice President Chu Hoang Ha emphasized that basic research is assessed as a premise and basis for developing scientific and technological research not only in Vietnam but also in the world. The year 2022 has been selected by the United Nations as the "International Year of Basic Science for Sustainable Development" which focuses on links between basic sciences and the Sustainable Development Goals with the message "a fundamental understanding of nature more effectively implement action programs for the benefit of all." This is also associated with the theme of Science and Technology Day 2024 "Science, technology and innovation – arousing aspirations, creating the future".

Adopted at the 38th Session (2015) of the General Assembly of UNESCO and officially developed on the basis of the Agreement between the Government of Vietnam and UNESCO in 2020, the International Center for Mathematical Research and Training and the International Center for Physics located at VAST have conducted training and research activities in physics and mathematics learn at an international level through classes, conferences, seminars; sponsoring young talents from Vietnam, Southeast Asia, towards some countries in Africa – where Physics and Mathematics are still developing; At the same time, initially organizing groups and implementing research projects in order to build strong research groups at regional and international levels, with emphasis on the participation of foreign physicists and mathematicians. In addition, the two centers have also successfully organized dozens of major scientific events, attracting thousands of direct attendees, hundreds of thousands of online views, contributing to UNESCO's goals on cooperation, research development and scientific training as well as dissemination of science to the community.

Prof. Dr. Chu Hoang Ha, Vice President of VAST, hopes that the two centers will increasingly develop, becoming an international science and technology organization, spreadig strongly in the world scientific community

These results were obtained by Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology – Head of MPI Subcommittee as well as Ms. Le Thi Hong Van – Acting Director General, Department of Cultural Diplomacy and UNESCO, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary General of the Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO; Ms. Tran Lan Huong – Head of MPI Department, UNESCO Office in Viet Nam recognized and highly appreciated. Inheriting the achievements of research and training at the two Institutes of Mathematics and the Institute of Physics – the host unit of the two Centers, the construction and development of the International Center for Mathematical Research and Training and the International Center for Physics gradually affirms the international integration of Vietnamese science. Deputy Minister Tran Hong Thai also proposed the two centers to study more suitable training fields besides mathematics and physics, while selectively absorbing UNESCO's standard orientations and learning new technologies in the world.
