Space technology cooperation prospects between Vietnam and Japan

From August 25th to 29th, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) delegation led by Prof. Chau Van Minh, VAST president, paid a working visit to Japan to promote Vietnam-Japan strategic cooperation in space technology. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Anh Tuan, director of the Vietnam National Satellite Centre, also participated in the delegation.

During the visit, the delegation held important working sessions with Japanese senior agencies, including the Office of National Space Policy – Japanese Cabinet Office, Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to seek opportunity and discuss the building of international cooperation projects between Vietnam and Japan.

On August 26th, at a senior meeting with the Japanese Office of National Space Policy, Prof. Chau Van Minh exchanged with Nishimoto, director of the Office of major projects such as the project on Vietnam Space Centre, the project on the application of QZSS global position satellite system of Japan in Vietnam and the coordination programme for the Japan-ASEAN earth-observation satellite system in the future.

At METI, Prof. Minh asked METI to support technical consultancy to complete the feasibility study on the construction of the Space Technology Application Centre in Ho Chi Minh City.

On August 27th, the delegation visited Kagoshima launch site where Japan’s Epsilon No.1 rocket is scheduled to be launched.

In the afternoon of August 28th, Prof. Chau Van Minh met Okumura, president of JAXA, at JAXA office. The two sides assessed space technology cooperation results between VAST and JAXA since 2006. The two sides also prepared content for the cooperation programme in the next five years towards the signing ceremony on December 12th 2013 on the 20th Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF), to take place in Hanoi from December 3rd to 6th 2013. The event will be co-organized by VAST and JAXA.

The visit was a new highlight for cooperation in space science and technology with Japanese partners. It also opened the promising prospect of new cooperation opportunities in rocket launching between Vietnam and Japan in the future.
