SkyLED light source and SkyLighting lighting solution protect the visual system and human health

The human visual system has been adapted to the natural light environment on earth for millions of years. Nowadays, we live and work in an environment of too much artificial light, so our vision system and health are seriously damaged. With the support of an independent state-level project under the Physics Development Program (code: DDL.CN.30/18), a research team from the Institute of Materials Science has successfully researched and manufactured a SkyLED light source and builds SkyLighting artificial lighting systems with properties best suited to human vision and health systems.

Natural lighting: Very high intensity, in the shade the illuminance varies around 3000- 5000lux. However, because the sky is evenly and wide illuminating, while the pupils are narrow, there is no glare, limiting the blue light falling on the macula. Natural light has bright intensity, color changes with the rhythm of day and night due to the rotation of the earth. The circadian rhythm of natural light regulates the circadian rhythms and cycles of hormones such as cortisol and melatonin.

Current status of artificial lighting: The illuminance in the room according to TCVN-7114 standard is only 300lux. Living in such a dimly lit environment causes not only eyesight reduction, but also reduction of work productivity and deep sleep. Although the amount of light in the house is only about 10% of the light outdoors, people still find it dazzling because the lamp size is too small, the luminance is high, and the ceiling is dark. Lighting in artificially lit environments is interrupted, without rhythm. Having to live and work in an environment of too much artificial light, due to the incompatibility of the environment with our genome, increases the risk of diseases such as myopia, amblyopia, heart disease, cancer, obesity, immunodeficiency, depression, hyperactivity and insomnia.

SkyLighting lighting solution: To solve the limitations of the current artificial lighting environment, scientists have researched and built artificial lighting systems that simulate the natural sky SkyLighting, improving eyesight, working and learning efficiency and user's health.
The illuminance in the SkyLighting environment increases from 2 to 3 times compared to the standard illuminance, i.e. from 600 to 900lux. Uniform lighting of the entire ceiling creates a very wide indirect light source and is completely glare-free. Light shines down from all directions, is present everywhere, creating absolutely no shadows. The light spectrum can be selected according to the time of day: white light (6500K) in the morning to stimulate hormones to increase alertness; neutral light (4500K) in the afternoon and yellow light (3000K) in the evening, avoiding melatonin suppression. This solution has been applied to many classrooms, offices, houses and hospitals.

The SkyLighting solution also saves investment costs and increases ceiling height, because it can eliminate the plaster ceiling, which is used to create space for installing recessed lights. Scientists have combined the SkyLighting solution with large-panel printing technology, creating a ceiling that simulates a tree sky, with a color spectrum and landscape best suited to human physiology and visual perception. The lighting in this room is also automatically controlled according to the rhythm of day and night.

Time spent studying at home poses the greatest risk of myopia for pupils because they are not exposed to natural light. Scientists have designed and manufactured an anti-myopia study table with a sky-simulating light box, using SkyLED lights with outstanding features such as: EH > 900 lux horizontal illuminance, high enough to stimulate cortisol, causing excitement and awakeness; wide projection angle, wide enough to remove shadows; optional 3 CCT color temperatures, 6500 K in the morning, 4200 K in the afternoon, 6500 K in the evening; indirect lighting completely eliminates glare; equipped with flat mirrors to increase visibility.

SkyLED light source: To implement the most optimal SkyLighting solution, scientists have researched and manufactured two types of lenses FO1, FO2 and three types of SkyLED lights with different and superior features. For pilot-scale production, these devices have integrated all the most modern technologies such as LED manufacturing technology, FO free-profile lens fabrication technology, and intelligent control technology.
