Several outstanding studies in agriculture by the Institute of Applied Materials Science

31/08/2014
The Institute of Applied Materials Science was established according to Decision No 2684/QĐ-KHCNVN dated December 26th 2005 by President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. The institute has functions to conduct basic research in material science and technology; develop and transfer new materials and technologies for industrial applications; participate in consulting with the government agencies on development strategies of materials science and technology; establish and promote cooperation relations with international/national organization in the field of materials science and technology.

Since its establishment, the Institute has actively participated in the implementation of many state, ministry and VAST-level projects and recorded achievements in the study and deployment of applications bringing high socio-economic value. They have studied and commercialized RO technology to filter salt water into pure water; Aluwat technology to treat aluminum infected water; technology and equipment to treat industrial and machine waste smoke; technology to treat Flora, Calcium and Mangan infected waters; flavouring for cosmetics and soft drink; studied successfully the materials that absorb waste oil, plastic and wooden materials such as PE, PP, PVC-cellulose, nano size and star-shaped polymer materials.

The institute has also made great contribution to the  agricultural sector. In recent years, the institute successfully studied and commercialized products of natural-origin to effectively serve in agriculture and increase plant’s productivity, prevent pestilent insects, all with a view to being friendly to the environment. They are:

TOB 1,25H và TOB 1,88H snail poison is a biological drug, which has the effect of killing slugs and yellow snails causing damage to plants which are non- toxic to fish. The drug was permitted circulation in 2012, by the Department of Plant Protection, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Mifum 0,6DD plant protection is a Nano technology drug used in combination with natural active elements to eliminate fungus on rice, rubber trees, coffee, pepper. The drug was permit circulation in 2012, by the Department of Plant Protection, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Nano Copper antibacterial chemicals and ZoO Nano antibacterial chemicals is a colloid, which functions to eliminate bacterium, fungus and several viruses on plants by reacting with the non-active enzyme mechanism of bacterium, fungus and viruses. These antibacterial chemicals can treat diseases on rice, vegetables and fruit trees.

The institute also successfully synthesized pheromone bait and has designed different kinds of traps for insects, which cause damage to vegetables and fruit trees. So far, the pheromone pilots in the fields have been shown to be highly effective on insect control. These products have been used in many regions in Vietnam, especially in the Mekong river delta.

CHO3, CHO6, CH24 moisture absorbent materials for plants are new materials which were studied and developed from agricultural waste such as straw, wood pulp and sawdust. It has the ability to retain water, is easily degradable, inexpensive and contributes to the reduction of farming costs in cultivation and irrigation, so increasing crop yields.

Moisture desiccant (CH) fertilized into soil effects water retention from 200 to 600 times normal capacity in comparison with background materials, helping provide water gradually to plants. When water in the moisturizer is consumed, the moisturizer returns to its original state, and is then able to absorb water again through rain or irrigation sources.

Test showed that moisture desiccant (CH) gave good results with crops in Gia Lai, Binh Phuoc, Dong Nai, Ninh Thuan and Tra Vinh provinces. The amount of water on the plants using the moisture desiccant (CH) decreased from 30% to 50%. In particular, CH03 and CH06 moisture desiccant is mainly applied for short-term, high yield plants such as vegetables, corn, cotton and sugar cane. CH24 moisture desiccant is applied for long-term plants such as jackfruit, mango, coffee, tea and citrus.

Aquilaria Crassna Pierre ex Lecomte planted on dried hill land in Binh Phuoc province used CH24 moisture desiccant contributed to increasing the rate of surviving plants.

Slow release fertilizer NPK: Similar to moisture desiccant (CH), slow release fertilizer NPK helps reduce the cost of fertilizer, decreases environmental pollution and increases crop productivity. Tests in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong and Dak Nong with slow release NPK in combination with moisture desiccant (CH), show that the quantity of fertilizer needed was reduced from 10 to 30% for tea, 20 to 30% for café’ and corn. However, it still ensures high productivity for plants. Now, scientists from the institute are accessing the slow release fertilizer NPK on pepper, cotton and rubber.

Over the past years, the Institute of Applied Materials Science has made incessant effort to create scientific products, which have practical significance, bringing high yield. In agriculture, the institute has helped farmers eliminate pestilent insects, increase plant productivity and reduced the cost of cultivation, contributing to the overall improvement of farmers’ lives. With clearly positive results, the institute has affirmed its position in the field of applied materials, meeting the national demand on science and technology in the period of renovation.
