Seminar on 15 years of postgraduate training – cooperation and development at the Institute of Geography

On May 20th, the Institute of Geography held a seminar on 15 years of postgraduate training, cooperation and development, to review 40 years of the institute development and share experiences in improve the quality of postgraduate training. The Institute of Geography is a leading institute and is also a postgraduate training centre in the field of geography and earth sciences in Vietnam.

The seminar drew the participation of Prof. Duong Ngoc Hai, vice secretary of the academy’s party committee and vice president of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Dr. Tran Trong Toan, senior expert of the Department of Tertiary Education under the Ministry of Education and Training; cadres from ministries, academies and universities having postgraduate training establishments in the field of geography; the Directory Board of the Institute of Geography lead by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Ky, director of the Institute, and all teachers and postgraduates from the institute.



Dr. Nguyen Dinh Ky made a speech to start the seminar. Dr. Vu Thi Thu Lan, vice director of the Institute of Geography gave a brief report on activities in the postgraduate training establishment of the institute over the past 15 years and orientations for development in the near future.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Training, leaders of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and with enthusiastic cooperation of postgraduate training establishments under universities and academies in Vietnam and foreign countries, postgraduate training at the Institute of Geography has obtained remarkable achievements. Seventy postgraduates successfully presented their doctoral thesis, contributing to solving urgent problems of geography science in Vietnam.  These doctors are key cadres in institutes, universities and state management agencies. Now, nearly 30 postgraduates are studying at the Institute. Each year, the Institute enrols from six to eight new postgraduates.

In 2010, the Institute was approved by the Ministry of Education and Training to provide independent doctoral training. The Institute has maintained the leading high quality in Vietnam in postgraduate training in geography and is striving to obtain advanced qualification in the region and meet world standards.

Participants at the seminar presented reports to improve the Institute’s training effectiveness to reach its goals. Most of participants agreed to carry out activities of the Institute based on close cooperation between scientific research and postgraduate training, and promote the training trend to meet social demand. They also emphasized the importance of further cooperation between the Institute and universities and academies in Vietnam and foreign countries in postgraduate training in geography.



Doctorate degrees, which were given to two postgraduates Bui Thi Mai and Nguyen Anh Hoanh at the end of the seminar, affirmed the recognition of achievements in teaching and scientific research of lectures and students at the Institute.



Concluding the seminar, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Ky, director of the Institute of Geography, expressed his belief that the future postgraduate training at the institute will continue to contribute to national science and technology.
