On October 6 - 7, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) organised a seminar to mark the 40th anniversary of the establishment of VAST, with a focus on introducing its outstanding achievements and research results over the past 40 years and most specifically from the last 5 years.

There were 9 sub-committees joining the seminar: basic research on mathematics and physics; information technology – automation – space technology; material science; biodiversity and bio-active substances; environment and energy; biotechnology; marine science and technology; earth sciences; discussion on applied research and technology development at VAST.

The seminar attracted many scientists from across the country. The 115 reports presented at the seminar were selective ones, including 13 from the sub-committee on basic research in mathematics and physics; 23 from the sub-committee on information technology - automation - space technology; 22 from the sub-committee on material science; 15 from the sub-committee on biodiversity and bio-active substances; 15 from the sub-committee on environment and energy; 13 from the sub-committee on biotechnology; 26 from the sub-committee on marine science and technology; 16 from the sub-committee on earth sciences; and 8 from the sub-committee on applied research and technology development.

Looking back on 40 years of research and development, it can be said that VAST has always led the country in basic research, in the research and application of high technology such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, new materials technology, remote sensing satellite technology and space technology. VAST is also a leading Vietnamese agency in international publications reaching ISI standards with an increase in recent years to 25% per year and accounting for 40-45% of the country’s international natural science publications. Between 2010-2015 alone, VAST recorded nearly 9,300 scientific publications, including 3,100 international publications with over 2000 works reaching ISI standards, hundreds of monographs, patents and inventions). Three magazines in mathematics and nanotechnology are listed in international Scopus and striving to be listed in SCI.

During the seminar, scientists focused on presenting the achievements and outstanding research results over the past 5 years; sharing experience in research; discussing and contributing ideas to the orientations for the scientific and technological development, research and application in the next state. This was also an opportunity for young scientists to study and gain a deeper understanding about the research activities of VAST.
