Scientific workshop “Quantum technology in the new era: International trends, opportunities and challenges for Vietnam”

A scientific workshop entitled "Quantum Technology in the New Era: International Trends, Opportunities and Challenges for Vietnam" was jointly organised in Hanoi on June 23, 2026, by the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, the Party Central Committee's Commission for Policies and Strategies, the Central Theory Council and Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

The workshop brought together leaders of central agencies, scientists, experts and representatives of ministries, sectors, research institutes, universities and businesses.

Overview of the workshop

Opening the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Minh Huan said research into quantum technology represents one of the emerging areas capable of driving breakthrough technological advances, fundamentally transforming human understanding and reshaping the world. He stressed that the field should be recognised early and given due attention. He called on participants to focus discussions on four key issues: identifying major global trends in quantum technology and their potential implications for Vietnam; assessing the country's existing strengths, remaining gaps and issues that require early attention for the development of this strategic technology; determining an approach suited to Vietnam's practical conditions while gradually building long-term capabilities; and examining the implications for political theory and strategic policymaking.

In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai emphasised that advancing theoretical understanding and policy thinking is essential, but only becomes meaningful when translated into concrete actions, mechanisms, implementation and practical capabilities. He noted that the workshop was not merely about discussing an emerging technology trend, but also about addressing a practical question: why Vietnam should pay attention to quantum technology at this point, and how the country should move forward if it chooses to do so.

Three presentations were delivered at the workshop, covering the following topics: Quantum Technology in the New Era – Vision and International Experience; Current Situation, Bottlenecks and Requirements for Quantum Technology Development in Vietnam; and Objectives, Tasks, Solutions and Priorities for the Next Phase.

Participants agreed that Vietnam should adopt a focused development strategy by investing in areas with the greatest potential to generate practical value, establishing effective coordination mechanisms, developing an interdisciplinary workforce ahead of demand, expanding selective international cooperation and implementing its roadmap in a prudent and phased manner.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai commended the thoughtful, insightful and practical contributions made by scientists, experts, government agencies, research institutes, universities and businesses. Fifteen presentations and discussion papers were delivered during the workshop, providing deeper insights into both the theoretical and practical issues surrounding the development of quantum technology in Vietnam.
