Scientific conference “Biodiversity and bioactive compounds for sustainable development”

19/05/2025
As part of the activities commemorating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (1975–2025), on April 4, 2025, at Institute of Chemistry, the Scientific Subcommittee on Biodiversity and Bioactive Compounds (VAST 04) organised the scientific conference entitled: “Biodiversity and Bioactive Compounds for Sustainable Development.” The conference provided an opportunity for experts and scientists to share results of scientific and technological research in the field of bioactive compounds, and to discuss future directions for biodiversity and bioactive compound development.

 Overview of the conference

Attending the conference were Prof. Dr. Sc. Tran Van Sung – Institute of Chemistry, Head of the Organising Committee; Prof. Dr. Pham Quoc Long – Institute of Natural Products Chemistry; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Sinh – Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources, Deputy Head of the Organising Committee; Prof. Dr. Ngo Quoc Anh – Director of the Institute of Chemistry; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Hong Minh – Deputy Director of Institute of Chemistry; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem – former Director of the Institute of Materials Science, Chair of the Scientific Council for Materials Science; Prof. Dr. Thai Hoang – former Director of Institute of Tropical Technology, Vice Chair of the Scientific Council for Materials Science; Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Tuyen – former Director of Institute of Chemistry; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Vu Giang – Deputy Director of Institute of Materials Science; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Hai Dang – Vice Rector of University of Science and Technology of Hanoi; and members of the VAST 04 Council. The event also attracted administrators and scientists from various educational institutions, research institutes, and universities within and outside VAST.

Representing the host institution, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Hong Minh – Deputy Director of Institute of Chemistry – extended greetings to the conference and stated that, pursuant to Decision 219/QD-VHL dated February 6, 2024 issued by Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology on organising scientific conferences to commemorate its 50th anniversary (1975–2025), the Subcommittee on Biodiversity and Bioactive Compounds (VAST 04) held the conference on April  4, 2025, with the Institute of Chemistry designated as the organising unit. Since 2024, the Institute has coordinated with the Organising Committee and leaders of ten research institutes under the Academy to prepare for the conference. Featuring eight keynote lectures, 26 research papers, and four summaries, the conference proceedings, “Biodiversity and Bioactive Compounds for Sustainable Development” (348 pages), were published by the Natural Sciences and Technology Publishing House with an ISBN number. The proceedings highlighted outstanding research achievements in biodiversity and bioactive compounds. In addition, 25 posters were displayed, showcasing research products that have been applied, transferred, or commercialised in the field of public health care.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Hong Minh – Deputy Director of Institute of Chemistry – delivers welcome remarks on behalf of the organising unit

In her report at the conference, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Hong Minh emphasised that the study of bioactive compounds from natural sources has been a strength of the Institute of Chemistry since its founding in 1978. Over 47 years of development, the Institute has achieved numerous successes and contributed significantly to science, particularly in the chemistry of natural products, with many new structures identified from various plant and microbial sources. Meeting the growing demand for research and development in natural compound chemistry, the training of scientists and specialists with in-depth expertise is essential. Thus, the Institute will continue to enhance its training and capacity-building efforts for researchers to improve research quality and application, helping Vietnam move closer to international scientific standards and enabling sustainable development in the future.

The conference was held in a stimulating and enriching scientific atmosphere. The programme consisted of two main sessions. The plenary session featured six keynote reports on research achievements in biodiversity and bioactive compounds conducted by institutes within VAST, chaired by Prof. Dr. Sc. Tran Van Sung and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Sinh. The second part included eight in-depth reports presented across two thematic sessions, chaired by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Tuyen; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Thi Mai Huong (Session 1); and Dr. Le Hung Anh; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Thi Kim Dung (Session 2). The specialised presentations highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the research – ranging from pharmaceutical chemistry to molecular biology and artificial intelligence – reflecting the current trend of technology integration in scientific research. Moreover, the presentations introduced new findings in natural biochemistry and novel approaches to exploiting and developing natural medicinal resources.

At the end of the conference, delegates engaged in discussion and offered suggestions for strategic development directions in chemistry, biodiversity, and bioactive compounds, particularly in the context of innovation and international integration. The conference clearly reflected the spirit of Resolution 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthrough developments in science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation.
