The reception also drew the participation of representatives and leaders from the Department of International Cooperation and the Institute of Biotechnology under VAST.
At the reception, Prof. Mong-Hong Lee expressed his willingness to promote cancer research and training in Vietnam, especially in the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Prof. Lee also wished to establish cooperative relations with VAST in general and the Institute of Biotechnology in particular, in this field. To create a premise for research and training between the two sides, Prof. Lee proposed an MoU between the center and VAST.
Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Vice President of VAST, thanked Prof. Lee for his goodwill and proposals on cooperation with VAST in cancer research. He also said that in the future the government of Vietnam would investment more in cancer research. He expressed his hoped that the cooperation would start with the Institute of Biotechnology, hence promoting and expanding other activities in the fields of mutual interest.
MD Anderson Cancer Center was established in 1941 as a unit of the University of Texas. As one of the most prestigious centers in the world for the care of cancer patients, training and prevention of cancers, MD Anderson is ranked one of America’s two leading cancer centers according to an annual survey for America’s best hospitals since 1991. Scientific research was quickly applied in clinical practice at the center. With its multidisciplinary approach, treatment and care of cancer patients proved highly effective. In 2013, more than 120,000 patients were provided treatment at the center, accounting for one third of new patients. The clinical trials of MD Anderson are some of the largest programmes of there type in the country. With the investment of more than 670 million dollars in research, the center ranked the first in terms of funding from the US National Institute of Cancer.
With the expectation of removing cancer from the world in general and in Vietnam in particular, MD Anderson Cancer Center will be one of potential partners of VAST in researching and training on cancer – the disease which is considered a death sentence for suffering patients.
