Promoting cooperation with French partners on energy and environmental technology

06/11/2024
On October 4, 2024, a delegation from Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) led by Prof. Dr. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, had a working session with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). This is a bilateral activity of VAST within the framework of the state visit to Mongolia, the Republic of Ireland, participation in the 19th Francophone Summit and the official visit to the French Republic by the General Secretary and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from September 30 to October 8, 2024.

Bilateral talks

At the meeting, VAST and CEA shared some of the ongoing cooperation activities between the Vietnam - France University (USTH) - VAST and CEA's affiliated units such as the Laboratory for Chemistry and Biology of Metal UMR 5249 CEA; Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Grenoble CEA-IRIG related to hydrogen energy, renewable energy, etc. CEA was established in 1945 and is one of France's leading research and development agencies in the fields of nuclear energy, renewable energy, defense, information technology and healthcare, operating under the direct direction of the French President. With more than 21,000 employees and an annual research budget of up to 5.8 billion Euros, CEA has been and is the world's leading research center on advanced technologies, especially energy and materials science. CEA also offers high-quality training in two forms: advanced training (postgraduate training) and continuing training (intensive training, improving skills). Based on the capacity and wishes of both sides, VAST and CEA discussed promoting research cooperation in the fields of environment, renewable energy and recycling of used energy materials. CEA, with its extensive experience in developing green technologies, is committed to supporting VAST in technology transfer and training young Vietnamese scientists. The two sides also mentioned cooperation in materials science and nanotechnology, with a focus on applications of semiconductor materials, an area in which CEA has many strengths through its close cooperation with ST Microelectronics in Grenoble. In addition, the two sides agreed to continue promoting joint training programs, in which scientists from both VAST and CEA will jointly supervise doctoral theses in the form of co-supervision and dual degrees. These discussion contents will be summarized and expressed in the Cooperation Agreement that both parties agree to complete and sign together as soon as possible.

In particular, the two sides hope that the cooperation in the coming time will be carried out effectively with the important connecting and promoting role of Prof. Tran Quoc Tuan - a French-Vietnamese scientist, the only senior Vietnamese professor at CEA and currently a member of the USTH Board of Management; and also an invited professor of USTH in many teaching and research activities at the school in recent times as well as a number of Vietnamese staff and students interning and working at CEA. This is also a connection between Vietnamese intellectuals in France with VAST in particular and with Vietnam in general, contributing to promoting the bridging role of Vietnamese intellectuals in the relationship between Vietnam and countries in the Francophone Community, bringing the world's scientific achievements to the country and bringing Vietnamese products to the international market as desired by the General Secretary and President shared at the meeting with outstanding Vietnamese intellectuals in the Francophone Community on October 5, 2024.

Strengthening international cooperation and integration is one of the solutions to implement the Development Strategy of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to 2030, vision 2045. VAST is currently looking for international partners who share the same vision, are willing to cooperate and share technology, and contribute to the sustainable development of science and technology in Vietnam and the region. Meetings with partners in Ireland and France; exchanges and connections with Vietnamese scientists and intellectuals here have opened up many new opportunities, marking a strong shift in VAST's development and cooperation strategy in the international arena.

Information about CEA
The French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Agency (CEA) is a public research organization founded in 1945 and subordinate to the French government. CEA plays a key role in research and technological development in the fields of nuclear energy, renewable energy, digital technology, and national security. It is a pillar of the French scientific system and an active participant in European research programs, such as EURATOM and Horizon Europe.

CEA is divided into several main research institutes: the National Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN); the Institute of Nuclear Energy (DEN); the Institute of Materials Science (DSM); the Institute of Renewable Energy (LITEN): Focusing on renewable energy; the Institute of Microelectronics and Nanotechnology (LETI). CEA collaborates extensively internationally, including on projects such as ITER and with countries such as the United States, Japan and Russia. This collaboration supports the development of sustainable energy solutions and strengthens France's scientific position.

Prof. Tran Quoc Tuan, a Vietnamese-French scientist, invited Professor of USTH, is currently a Senior Professor at INSTN & Research Director of LITEN.
