Promote research and training cooperation with Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan
VAST is a scientific and technological research agency under the Government, and as the leading technology research and development unit in Vietnam, over the past 50 years, VAST has developed cooperation with more than 100 research institutes and scientific organizations around the world. Speaking to Prof. Tatsumisago Masahiro, President of Osaka Metropolitan University, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, sincerely thanked Osaka Prefecture University (OPU) for the cooperation since 2006. With more than 100 years of development, OPU has shared many experiences and training cooperation for VAST of many scientific staff in the field of pollution research and environmental treatment; development of biopharmaceutical products from indigenous biological resources – areas where Japan has strengths and Vietnam has needs in the development process.

In 2022, OPU restructured, forming the current Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU). Human resources that have matured in the process of cooperation with OPU in the past are an important factor continuing the cooperation between the two sides; especially for the cooperation process between VAST and the Association for Scientific Assistance of Japan (JSPS) of which both VAST and OMU are currently the focal points, thereby strengthening cooperation with Japanese partners in general. Prof. Tatsumisago Masahiro, President of OMU, said he was known for the collaboration between VAST and OPU before in the study of polysaccharide compounds from seaweed; and appreciated VAST’s recent achievements. OPU has nearly 20 years of cooperation with VAST. Despite the interruption due to the COVID pandemic, in the new phase after the merger with Osaka City University (OCU) into the current OMU, the cooperation between the two sides will have strong potential for development; especially training cooperation through OMU's affiliated units such as the Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology, Technology and Medicine (Graduate School of Human Life and Ecology; Graduate School of Medicine and the School of Medicine; Graduate School of Engineering and the School of Engineering). The results of cooperation and new cooperation directions on food safety have been concretized in 4 reports of two sides.
Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh had a respectful affection for Prof. Maeda Yasuaki, teacher and colleague of many VAST students, especially in the field of environmental chemistry. Prof. Maeda Yasuaki has been collaborating with VAST since the 2000s, and his accurate advice on the Formosa environmental incident in Vietnam in 2016 helped VAST provide a scientific basis to properly assess the nature of this incident. Prof. Maeda Yasuaki is still actively promoting cooperation between VAST and OMU, especially in the field of biomass biofuels.
Prof. Yasuaki Maeda discusses cooperation activities between VAST and OMU
With the desire to continue the successes achieved, VAST and OMU have signed a Cooperation Agreement for 2023-2028; In which, two sides will jointly promote research and training cooperation in areas of mutual interest such as chemistry, biology, materials, applied science for green and sustainable development through academic exchanges, exchange of lecturers and students, etc young staff and student co-instructors (between research units and especially the two Universities affiliated to VAST and Graduate Schools of OMU), coordinate the implementation of joint research projects. Building on the trusting cooperation between the Academy and OPU in the past, this Cooperation Agreement between VAST and OMU not only marks a continuation but also strengthens the long-term relationship between the two research and training institutions; contributing to promoting diplomatic relations with 50 years of history between Vietnam and Japan.
