Project to publish monograph on Vietnam’s sea and island

Scientists and economic experts forecast that the 21st century is the century of oceans. Vietnam is among few nations that has marine exclusive economic zone of one million cubic kilometers. Therefore, the Party and the State gives special care to comprehensively developing the marine economy, considering that sea and island is a specific and important objective in the socio-economic development programme for the near future.

To directly participate in the implementation of sea and island socio-economic development programmes in Vietnam, science and technology sectors have gradually built action programmes. For many years, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) has given special care to research and survey programmes on natural resources in our nation’s seas. VAST approved three projects of the Natural Sciences and Technology Publisher on compiling and publishing monographs on Vietnam’s sea and island. The Natural Sciences and Technology Publisher does according to proposal of the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Information and Communications and order of the State.

Monographs focus on reflecting issues about oceanography, marine geology, marine biology, marine environment and major issues related to Vietnam’s seas and islands. Monographs in the book collection are compiled and appraised by scientists from institutes under VAST. The publisher has the mission to compile, appraise and publish highly exact publications and meet the demand of readers.

Books published in 2010

After nearly five years of implementation since 2008, with the support from VAST together with the order of the State through the Department of Publication under the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Natural Sciences and Technology Publisher has released 25 monographs about Vietnam’s seas. Each 250 to 300-page monograph, size 19x27cm, printed 600 to 1,000 copies. After publication, monographs were sent to organizations and agencies studying seas and islands, libraries in provinces and cities, universities, departments of science and technology, departments of natural resources and environment. Especially, the book entitled “The danger of earthquake and tsunami in coastal Vietnam” by Prof. Dr. Sc. Bui Cong Que, won the silver award for best book in Vietnam Book Awards 2010.

Books published in 2011

The book collection is valuable scientific materials to provide rare information to study, exploit and preserve natural resources, and protect the sovereignty of the national seas and islands. The collection has high scientific content to ensure international and domestic readers to have more knowledge about seas and islands.
