Professor Phung Ho Hai Receives Humboldt Research Award

The Humboldt Research Award is presented to internationally recognized scientists to honor outstanding research achievements throughout their careers. Each award is valued at 80,000 euros, and recipients are invited to Germany to collaborate in research with leading scientific partners. This is one of the key programs of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation since 1972.

Professor, Doctor of Science Phung Ho Hai, former Director of the Institute of Mathematics, VAST

Professor Phung Ho Hai, born in 1970, is an expert in algebra and algebraic geometry. He served as Director of the Institute of Mathematics for the period 2017–2022 and is currently Secretary General of the Vietnam Mathematical Society. He graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University (Russian Federation), obtained his PhD from the University of Munich (Germany) in 1996, and earned his Doctor of Science degree from the University of Duisburg–Essen (Germany) in 2005.

In his research, he has focused on areas such as quantum groups, Hopf algebras, and category theory, with numerous works published in international mathematics journals. He received the Von Kaven Award of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in 2006 and was the lead author of an outstanding scientific work in 2023 in algebraic geometry.

In addition to his research contributions, Professor Phung Ho Hai has been actively involved in training young mathematicians and promoting international scientific cooperation. He is also a Young Affiliate of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

The awarding of the Humboldt Research Award to Professor Phung Ho Hai continues to affirm the growing prestige and position of Vietnam’s basic sciences in the international arena, while opening up further opportunities for in-depth research cooperation between Vietnam and Germany in the coming period.
