Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, visited and worked with the Institute of Earth Sciences.

On March 9, 2026, Professor Tran Hong Thai, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Secretary of the Party Committee, and President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, visited and chaired a working session with the Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) to discuss the implementation of Resolution No. 57 of the Politburo, the development orientation of the Earth Sciences in the coming period, and the promotion of the application of Earth Sciences in solving practical problems in localities.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, expressed his honor and pride that the Institute was the first unit to be visited and worked with by the President immediately after the Prime Minister's appointment decision. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh gave a general overview of the Institute of Earth Sciences' activities, including personnel organization, human resources, basic research activities, and the implementation of applications serving socio-economic development and disaster prevention. At the same time, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh proposed the rapid implementation of investment projects to upgrade infrastructure, equipment, radio stations, and laboratory systems towards modernization, meeting the requirements of scientific research and application in the context of the country's new development. On this occasion, the Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences also expressed his hope to continue receiving attention, guidance, and support from VAST to further develop the Institute's scientific and technological potential in the future.

Also at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Tien Dung - Director of Department of Application & Development of Technology - presented the Earth Science tasks planned for implementation with Hanoi in the near future, focusing on technologies that can be applied and deployed immediately in the locality.

During the meeting, Prof.Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Science, discussed the organizational model, infrastructure, and development orientation of the Earth Sciences sector, emphasizing that this is an opportunity for Institute of Earth Sciences to develop. Professor Tran Tuan Anh suggested that the Institute of Earth Sciences should focus the intellectual resources of its scientific staff and experts to build and implement interdisciplinary tasks, addressing major national issues.

In his concluding remarks at the meeting, Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai emphasized that to effectively implement Resolution 57 of the Politburo, the Institute of Earth Sciences needs to focus on two main tasks in the coming period: basic research and applied development in the field of Earth Sciences, thereby making important contributions to the overall development of the country. The President requested that the planning and development of IES's infrastructure be carried out based on a long-term vision, linked to the development strategy of the unit and VAST; that attention be paid to training and building a team of highly qualified scientific staff and proactively developing a plan for staffing and personnel allocation in the coming period; that the efficiency of the station system serving basic research be further improved; and that operational and forecasting standards be established for some specific station activities.

The President of VAST expressed confidence that, with its traditions, spirit of solidarity, and the efforts of its staff and employees, the Institute of Earth Sciences will continue to affirm its position and core role in the field of Earth Sciences, making positive contributions to the overall development of VAST and helping to solve practical problems serving socio-economic development and ensuring national security and defense.
