The appointment of Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai as President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology reflects the trust of the Party and the State in a contingent of scientific personnel with high professional qualifications and extensive management experience, capable of meeting the requirements for the development of science and technology in the new period.

| Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai was born in 1974 and is originally from Ha Tinh Province. He graduated with a university degree in Engineering and Technology, specializing in Automation of Thermal–Energy Process Control, in the Russian Federation in 1997; and defended his doctoral dissertation in Earth Sciences and Mathematics at Heidelberg University (Federal Republic of Germany) in 2005. In 2011, he was conferred the title of Associate Professor in Earth Sciences, within the interdisciplinary field of Earth and Mining Sciences; and in 2019 he was promoted to Professor in the same field. In 2025, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” (MPEI). He also holds an Advanced Degree in Political Theory. Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Tran Hong Thai has held many important positions in the fields of hydrometeorology and state management: Deputy Director of the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment, concurrently Director of the Center for Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment Consultancy; Deputy Director General of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, and later Director General of the Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration; and Deputy Minister of Science and Technology. He has also held key leadership positions at the local level, including: Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Committee of Lam Dong Province; later Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and Chairman of the People’s Council of Lam Dong Province. In September 2025, he was appointed Standing Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Standing Vice President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. In January 2026, he was elected Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the 14th term. |
