Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh, President of VAST, delivers his remarks of appreciation upon receiving the title of Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences
Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh was elected Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences - one of the world's leading scientific institutions with more than 300 years of history - during its General Assembly held on May 29–30, 2025. Established in 1724, RAS is among the world's most prestigious academic centers, gathering nearly 2,000 academicians and a network of hundreds of research institutes across the Russian Federation, and has been home to many Nobel laureates and scientific breakthroughs in natural sciences and technology. With this recognition, Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh becomes the fourth Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences from VAST, alongside Prof. Academician Tran Dai Nghia, Prof. Academician Nguyen Van Hieu, and Prof. Academician Dang Vu Minh; and is concurrently an Academician of three international academic organizations: Russian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS).

Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh is a leading expert in the field of biochemistry of natural compounds, with nearly 500 scientific works and more than 40 patents and utility solutions. In his capacity as President of VAST since 2008, he has led the implementation of numerous national key scientific and technological programs, such as the Tay Nguyen 3 Program, Vietnam’s Earth-observation satellite development program, the national natural history museum system, and the project to develop the Vietnam–France public international university (USTH), among others. In particular, Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh has made many significant contributions to advancing Vietnam–Russia scientific cooperation, especially in basic research and human resource training. He has promoted the development and implementation of marine cooperation roadmaps between Vietnamese and Russian academies; directed the organization of joint survey missions using the Russian research vessels “Academician Oparin” and “Academician Lavrentiev” in Vietnam’s East Sea; strengthened cooperation in research and human resource training in nuclear physics with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna (JINR); and expanded interdisciplinary research programs in new materials, pharmaceutical chemistry – biotechnology, nuclear physics, and space technology with numerous Russian research institutes and universities. These efforts have helped strengthen the foundation of basic research at VAST in particular and in Vietnam more broadly, foster the training of highly qualified scientific personnel, and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Russia. In recognition of his substantial contributions to promoting high-quality scientific research and training cooperation between Vietnam and Russia, the Council of the Union of Educational and Scientific Organizations of the Russian Federation selected Prof. Academician Chau Van Minh as a “Russian Ambassador for Education and Science.”

Overview of the session
The election of the President of VAST as an Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences is not only a well-deserved recognition of an outstanding scientist, but also a source of pride for the Vietnamese scientific community. It stands as clear evidence of the continuous development and deepening international integration of Vietnamese science, while opening new opportunities to further strengthen research and training cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in the years ahead.
