Products from medicinal herbs support the treatment of osteoarthritis
Chairman MSc. Ngo Thi Phuong and the research team
Osteoarthritis is a condition in which cartilage damage is accompanied by inflammation and reduced amount of joint fluid because the cartilage regeneration process is not enough to compensate for the worn-out cartilage layer in the joints. Over time, the articular cartilage covering the surface of the bones will gradually become thin and damaged, causing pain and limitation of movement, even disability. Although osteoarthritis does not cause serious effects on the patient's life, osteoarthritis will significantly reduce the patient's quality of life. MSc. Ngo Thi Phuong and the research team.
Today, the treatment of osteoarthritis with traditional medicine or herbal products is popular due to its safety, ease of tolerance and almost no side effects, and possibility to be used for a long time to help improve the quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis.
Don vo tree is used by indigenous people and Oriental Medicine Association of Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province, to treat musculoskeletal disorders and herniated discs very effectively. People often use fresh leaves, crushed and applied together with Mugwort leaves, Curtain Creeper to treat degenerative diseases of the back and cervical vertebrae. The rhizomes and leaves are decoction of drinking water, if combined with the application of medicine, after only 3-5 days, the effect has been clearly seen. The Don vo tree is growing wild in the mountains in some parts of Thai Nguyen province. According to information from the indigenous people, the tree is being hunted and sold to China, so this source of medicinal herbs is increasingly depleted. According to the literature on plants and medicinal plants, as well as national and international publications, the research team found that Dendrobium is a medicinal species that has not been studied. Don vo tree is named after the locality and the scientific information about the Don vo plant is not available at all.

Through the research process, the group has determined the scientific name of the tree is Premna lucidula Miq., whose synonym is Premna flavescens Buch.-Ham. ex C.B.Clarke, belongs to the family Lamiaceae and has registered in the gene bank. The project has built a trial planting model with a scale of about 700 trees in Van Han commune, Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province. The results showed that the cuttings were treated with rooting stimulants and then planted on the substrate for survival rate, rooting rate and root quality, good growth and development. In the experimental garden, the tree was grown well, similar to the tree that is distributed in nature.
The topic has researched and given a formula for making PremNa TN Bone and Joint Tablets to support the treatment of osteoarthritis with the main ingredient being dried dandelion root mixed with a number of medicinal herbs including Cot Toai Bo, Do Trong, Dang Quy, Tho Phuc Linh.

The research results of the topic are new results in the country as well as in the world, providing scientific data for the tree (Premna flavescens). The applied products are PremNa TN. Osteoarthritis Tablets and massage paste that have the effect of treating osteoarthritis, osteoarthritis pain, which are new and potential products for commercialization.
The project has developed a basic standard for the product of PremNa TN. Osteoarthritis Tablets and a set of product documents that are eligible to apply for a circulation permit. The research team has published 02 international articles on the SCIE list, 02 national papers and 01 useful solutions, which has accepted valid applications. There has been 01 Reportage on the Don Vo tree broadcast on Thai Nguyen TV station in March 2022.
From the obtained results, the research team wishes to replicate the model of planting and developing Don Vo medicinal plants for households in Thai Nguyen province to preserve the province's precious medicinal plants and create an area for medicinal herbs as raw materials to manufacture products to support osteoarthritis treatment; continue to research and perfect the technology of extracting the product Don Vo on a larger scale and test production of the product; and develop a plan to commercialize the product to bring the product to the market.
