President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology holds an online talk with Laos Minister of Technology and Communications

On December 30, 2021, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, had an online talk with Prof. Acad. Boviengkham Vongdara, Minister of Technology and Communications of Laos, and President of Laos National Academy of Sciences (former Minister of Science and Technology of Laos). The event drew the participation of the Head of the International Cooperation Department, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Chief of Office of Laos Ministry of Technology and Communications, Chief of Office of Laos National Academy of Sciences and relevant Vietnamese-Laos officials.

President Chau Van Minh congratulated Prof. Acad. Boviengkham Vongdara, newly appointed Minister of Technology and Communications of Laos. President Minh and Minister Boviengkham Vongdara reviewed outstanding cooperation activities between VAST and Laos National Academy of Sciences. During 10 years of official cooperation, the two sides signed 5 cooperation documents, completed and put into use two key laboratories for Life Science and Earth Science supported by Vietnam located at the Laos National Academy of Sciences; collected and built collections of Lao natural specimens; transferred experimental production technologies of biodiesel and plant by-products, water treatment, production of microbial products; and coordinated to provide training science and technology staff for Laos. Currently, the two sides are carrying out 7 joint projects within the framework of implementing activities of two key laboratories.

Minister Boviengkham Vongdara sincerely thanked Vietnam in general and the VAST in particular for support and cooperation in the past time, and said that over the past 10 years, VAST has cooperated to research, train and transfer many important technologies suitable for the development of science and technology in Laos. In particular, the two key laboratories and the recently implemented bilateral cooperation projects have increased opportunities to meet, exchange research experiences, and deploy scientific and technological activities between Lao and Vietnamese scientists. The two sides have recently conducted research and contributed a number of products for COVID-19 prevention in Laos.

At the talk, the representative of the Laos National Academy of Sciences  said that the academy is currently under the organizational structure of Laos Ministry of Education and Sports. It is working closely with units under the ministry to deploy the activities of the two key laboratories as well as the existing cooperation activities between the two sides. President Minh highly appreciated the efforts to maintain and develop activities of these two key laboratories, especially in the context of the complicated development of COVID-19 epidemic and the organization in the process of restructuring He also said that the two sides need to continue to exchange and propose to develop cooperation methods suitable to the new situation.

President Minh and Minister Boviengkham Vongdara also exchanged and agreed to further promote existing cooperation activities,strengthen cooperation in training, exchange of information and scientific data, especially in fields the Laos Ministry of Science and Technology is interested in, such as information technology, big data, and artificial intelligence. The two sides agreed to discuss and build cooperation agreements on science and technology between VAST and Laos Ministry of Technology and Communications; assigned the International Cooperation Department of VAST and the Office of the Laos Ministry of Technology and Communications to be the focal point for negotiation, organization of exchange and signing activities in the first half of 2022.

On the occasion of new year 2022, in a friendly and sincerely atmosphere, President Minh and Minister Boviengkham Vongdara hoped that cooperation activities and projects on science, human resource training and technology transfer between the two sides will continue to be implemented effectively, contributing to strengthening and deepening the friendship between Vietnam and Laos.
