President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology attended the 35th Session of the World Association of Academy of Sciences (IAAS)

On September 27-28, 2022, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh - President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) attended the 35th Session of the Association of World Academy of Sciences (IAAS) held at the Research Center Kurchatov State and Lomonosov University, Russia.

The 35th session is the meeting to summarize the period 2017-2022, to develop directions for the term 2022-2027. With this important nature, the Session was opened with a speech by the Chairman of the Council of the Eurasian Economic Commission Mikhail Myasnikovich, the Union Secretary of State Dmitry Mezentsev, the Executive Secretary of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Sergey Lebedev, in which he highly appreciated the important role of academies and scientific research in the current socio-economic development, and said that training high-quality human resources and international cooperation are important factors promoting the development of science and technology. During the period 2017-2022, IAAS developed and connected members through scientific activities; consolidating documents and resolutions related to the organization's operating regulations; develop major research programs of the Association; approved and implemented many initiatives to develop the Association such as digitizing science, cooperating in research to solve global issues such as food security, energy, environment, COVID-19 pandemic, etc. In order to mobilize the wisdom of leading scientists in the member Academies to advise on the development and cooperation of science and technology of the Association, in the past period, IAAS has approved the establishment regulations. and organize the activities of the IAAS councils; develop Council of young scientists, contribute to training the next generation for the Association.

As the President of VAST - a member of IAAS from the early stages of its establishment, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, together with Presidents of Academies, Leaders of national research organizations in the Association, approved reports of member academies and IAAS scientific councils on new challenges - new opportunities in basic scientific research; the role of research institutions in interdisciplinary scientific development; creative mechanism, innovation projects; energy and biotechnology research issues; training linkages, the need to focus joint efforts on promising scientific fields; evaluate the activities of the Scientific Councils, the Council of Young Scientists in the period 2017-2022, discuss the role and challenges of scientific and technological research, of the National Academy of Sciences ... to develop operational orientations for the term 2022-2027 and elect the Association's President for a new term and members of the Association's Scientific Councils. GS. Tran Dai Lam, Director of the Institute of Tropical Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology was elected to the Scientific Council of Chemistry of the Association.

In particular, the 35th session solemnly awarded the honorary flag of the Association to official member organizations, honored outstanding scientists by awarding the title of IAAS Academician - the initiative of the Association to attract participation of outstanding scientists from around the world. In the first round of voting at the 33rd Session of 2019, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh was honored to be elected as an Academician by the IAAS Council along with 10 other famous scientists in the world. After the elections in 2020, 2021 and 2022, IAAS currently has a total of 25 Academicians. Up to this point, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh is the only Vietnamese scientist elected as a member of the Association of World Academy of Sciences; he is also an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. Within the framework of the 35th Session, Assoc. Dr. Tran Tuan Anh, VAST Vice President and Dr. Le Quynh Lien, Head of the International Cooperation Department was awarded a Medal by the Association for the contributions to the development of the organization in the past period.

Besides activities in the 35th Session, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh, VAST President had a bilateral meeting with Prof. Acad. Gusakov, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and signed the Roadmap of cooperation for the period of 2023-2025 to concretize the research contents discussed at the online working session between the two Academies in April 2022.

During his work in Moscow, Prof. Acad. Chau Van Minh led the delegation of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology to offer incense to President Ho Chi Minh at the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia; together with Ambassador Dang Minh Khoi exchanged and discussed issues of scientific and technological cooperation between VAST and the Academy of Sciences in the Association as well as bilateral cooperation between the Academy and its Russian partners. The success of scientific and technological cooperation activities will also contribute to cultivating the long-term friendship between the two countries of Vietnam and the Russian Federation.

The International Association of Academy of Sciences (IAAS) was established on September 23, 1993 with the goal of developing into a multilateral science and technology organization, linking academies around the world to make a useful contribution to the development of global science. Currently, IAAS has 21 official members and 6 associate members, including many scientific academies with a long history of development and achievements in the world such as the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Sciences, China, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, etc. Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology has been an official member of IAAS since 1993.
