On August 13th, 2009, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) presented insignia to Ms. Kojima Eiko, Consultants to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the A1 meeting room. The ceremony was attended by Prof. Dr. Sc Nguyen Dinh Cong, Vice President of VAST; Prof. Dr Dang Dinh Kim, Vice President of the Institute of Environment Technology; and Mr. Nguyen Gia Lap, Deputy Chairman of VAST’s International Cooperation Department.

Ms. Kojima Eiko, graduated student in astronomy and master of environmental science in Japan, started working in Vietnam since 2006. She had significant contributions to environmental protection in Vietnam.

During Ms Kojima’s tasks in Vietnam, the project: “Improving VAST’s capability in protecting water environment” is being implemented and is showing significant results. Under the framework of the project, between 2008 and 2009, 10 staffs of VAST were sent to Japan to follow masters and doctor training programs there. Moreover, at Ms Kojima’s eyes, JICA provided devices worth nearly USD1.03 million to Institutes of Environment Technology in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to Ms. Kojima’ proposals and JICA’s support, meetings between the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment and VAST were organized and are expected to tighten the two-sided cooperation to further control environmental pollution in Vietnam.

Together with the project: “Improving VAST’s capability in protecting water environment”, Ms. Kojima is a consultant to the project: “Studying and protecting water environment in Vietnam’s river valleys” which was cooperated between JICA and Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment. The project aims to develop a mechanism for managing river valleys in Vietnam. In spite of being the first technical project between Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment and JICA, the two sides worked effectively.

Ms Kojima also took part in other activities, such as: studying climate change, preserving biological diversity and forest resources. Aiming to recognize Kojima’s positive contributions to environmental protection tasks in Vietnam in general and environment technology research activities in VAST in particular, VAST decided to present insignia to Ms. Kojima.
